Default Crane accident in Kelowna

I did post something about this on the Random thread yesterday evening, but it is now so much worse.

https://www.citynews1130.com/2021/07...pse-four-dead/

A crane being dismantled from a new construction in downtown Kelowna collapsed. 4 construction workers confirmed dead.

A 5th person is missing, believed to be buried in rubble and presumed dead, and might have been in an adjacent building that collapesed, not a construction worker.

Tragic, not a nice way to go, falling 28 storeys in the crane cab.

I watched the news video voiced by a reporter called Ria Renouf and I thought it was a spoof - it's like somebody doing a parody of a news report.

and the 5th person was in a building next door to the tower, the crane fell on it. That person (I've not yet heard whether male of female) was not a construction worker.

5 block radius around the site is blocked off.

That sounds awful. What station was it do you know??

I very very rarely watch TV, only listen to CBC radio.

Per the link given by caretaker - it was a male.. a bystander - at the office building
A specialized team of first responders has recovered the body of a bystander who was killed when a construction crane collapsed into his office building earlier this week in Kelowna, B.C.

The heavy urban search-and-rescue team with Vancouver Fire and Rescue Services (VFRS) safely removed the man's body around 12:30 a.m. PT after more than six hours of work, according to the team's lead.

So sad. There are GoFundMe pages set up.

Does anyone know how a crane can just topple like that?

It was being dismantled.. perhaps some bolts / pins were removed at the wrong time - or failed.. (broke)

This report gives some info about crane collapses and causes https://www.forconstructionpros.com/...re-preventable

Sad and unfortunate for those killed and their families.

Cranes have always scared me, brave souls to be able to work them and build/dismantle them.

What I found horrifying was the union involved saying yesterday that they would be pushing for "rules and regulations to govern the put up and take down of high cranes, as they have been doing for many years"

WorkSafe BC and the government have apparently never done this!

The crane manufacturers do issue instructions on how it should be done, but ...........

TBH ............... I did not read that article all the way through or click on other links in it, it all seemed OK as far as I read.

I knew what the most recent radio reports and what the newspaper had said, and that was the first link I saw that was the most recent by about 10 minutes.

That's awful. Reminds me of this: https://www.change.org/p/health-mini...lene-mackinnon
"Over 700 deaths here; 30 in Washington and 79 in Oregon. King County, WA, which has a population similar to Vancouver, has had 13 deaths. Considering how hot it was in those two states and how a lot of people there, like us have no AC, illustrates how badly this was handled here."

Seattle like many US city's has a more robust emergency medical system than we do in BC which probably helps as well. What happened here during the heat wave was criminal really.
