Trudeau has appointed the 30th Governor-General, the first Indigenous person to fill that role, and a woman at that!!
Mary Simon, an Inuk/Inuit with a white father from Manitoba who worked for the Hudson's Bay trading post, born in northern Quebec in 1947.
Sounds as if she will be a good representative!

While it is a nice gesture, governor-general is kind of a vestigial role at this point. No doubt the Conservatives would have put an old white dude there instead though, but again, is this is the best we can really do? Just not be absolute garbage and just moderately ok? lol.
Indigenous issues are so underrepresented in actual government. Mumilaaq Qaqqaq, an indigenous MP from Nunavut, couldn't handle being racially profiled and intimated in parliament and had to step down recently.
If Trudeau hadn't broken his promise to end FPTP, a federal indigenous party might have had a shot at getting a % of the seats if we had proportional representation.

That's a new one on me. What does a federal indigenous party look like? The Assembly of First Nations isn't a party, it's more like a government.
