Coyote in Ajax
#1
Saw one tonight while out walking the dog in south Ajax, we have a small dog, snack size i would think.
We were 10-15 foot from him, and he just stood there. Then he followed us for a while. We then went home.
Ohh and before anyone asks, NO he was not 5 foot tall.
The fellow was about the size of a German Sheppard.
Seen Racoons, Skunks and fox's but this is my first Coyote.
Looked just like this one \/\/\/

lol at "snack size".
Our dog is just a little smaller than an Alsatian, so would probably survive, but I hate to think how much he would cost to stitch him up, lol.

When the coyotes start howling around the lake it can be amazing - one pack begins then another, and another until there are maybe 4 or 5 packs yodeling from all directions. Then they fall silent and the next sound you hear is a whole bunch of scratching from all the little dogs at the cottages scratching at the screen door to get inside.

We get quite a lot of coyotes around here right in town. I probably get to see one on average once a month but often hear them howling at night. We think when we hear them at night that they are probably across the river on the reserve. I had one cross the road in front of me the other week right next to Canadian Tire. They're about but I've not heard of problems with them here in town. I've heard a couple of stories where they've attacked a dog or a cat on acreages nearby. I have seen them occasionally down by the dog park too but, again, I've not heard of any incidents with them down there.

I heard while waiting by the gun counter at Cdn Tire that they are breeding with the local timber wolf population. There was a cull (well, a local hunting bounty/ competition) and some of the ones weighed in locally were over 70lbs!!!
Im not that suprised one or two might have made it into the more populated bits of the Durham region, there are a lot about, and this winter wont have done much to peg the population.

Quite a few packs in dt Van - live in the parks, dock area and along the railway tracks .

Saying that, he was trying to play with a couple of deer yesterday. Balls of steel..........if he had any.
Still, rather have coyotes than big ****ing bears.

Yup, they roam the laneways of E Van _ my hounds are fairly big but still wouldn't like to see the reuslting outcome of such a liaison!
Already had to dispose of skunks, racoons, ducks, crows, geese and squirrells that they have "interfaced" with!

Luckily the raccoon and skunk run ins have so far been when he's on leash. Playing with the bear has so far been the most terrifying.
Where do you take yours?

Park and til ford on n shore, new Brighton park, confederation in Burnaby has a nice trail down to beach, the end of BP trail to Deep Cove Bluff.
Locally - trout lake or the jj beans on commercial!

Today we went to Iona beach - near airport - they can. Run and run there , although last time they did enjoy a nice roll in a decomposing seal carcass!

Nice. Haven't done a couple of those so will try them. We're on the sea wall so I'm often lazy and walk along that, maybe popping to the dog parks along it and sometimes to kits dog beach. Spend a lot of time on the father in laws acreage too.
