Is it worth getting a plan which includes not having to pay to receive calls as this is an alien concept in regards to UK mobile/cell plans? You can tick boxes (such as free incoming calls, month-to-month) and see how much each company charges and compare them on one page. You need to select Province and Prepaid from the dropdowns at the top. http://www.cellphones.ca/cell-plans/ :) |

Their rates are absurd compared to any other provider at 30c a text sent and received, and 50c a min, calls made or received. And yes those are true, recently updated this year. Ridiculous. Koodo is #1 IMO (couldn't you tell ;)) with Virgin coming in second. With prepaid (with any provider) you will not need a credit check as Jsmth did for his post-paid plan. The rest of them are ripoffs/the coverage is shite. |

Sorry, yes I remember, I just think there was so much information on this thread on the subject I'm overwhelmed by it and not really sure what I need and concerned that I will be sold something by a dodgy salesman.

Well if you have a plan with, say, 200 mins, any call made or received will come off that 200 mins, thats just how it is. If you have a plan that doesn't include "Anytime minutes" then there is usually a charge of between $0.20 and $0.50 () per min.

Add one of these Text Packs to your plan & save! If you're texting without a pack, you pay $0.25 per message sent or received. :p |

Canadians phone plans  your going to be in your element if you get to the UK :) Apologies but I don't quite understand the difference between pre-paid and post-paid. Pre-paid to me is where you top the phone up with credit and when it runs out you top it up again. Post-paid (not a term I am familiar with) is where you have a contract/bill and you pay that every month for a set term (eg 2 years) You would have a set amount depending on your plan but if you go over your minutes/texts/dates you lay the additional charge. In the UK you usually need a credit check for these as contracts are usually 2 years. I have a rolling 30 days contract though as my initial plan was up after 2 years and I didn't want another 2 years so I only have to give 30 days notice. Is this similar to what you are talking about? Also in regards to the receiving of calls. I know my ex used to receive a lot of marketing calls, which would come off his minutes and annoyed him. Is there any way I can make sure I don't get these calls? |
Re: Cheapest PAYG phone tariff in Canada please?
Pre-paid is simply you pay in advance and have to top up every month or the service is cut, and be 1 minute late in paying by the deadline and I mean servic is cut, luckily comes on within minutes of topping up.
Each company has various pre-paid plans, anything from pay as you go paying per text, per minute etc, to more normal plans with services bundled for 1 price. Post paid is when you pay every month, after service has been provided, and this is where contracts become involved if you choose not to buy your phone outright, you can still be on post paid plan and buy the phone outright, in which you'd be on a month to month contract vs a commitment, the commitment comes from getting the reduced or free phone they talk you into. I am now on post paid, own the phone outright, can cancel at anytime without penalty. You don't have to sign a contract to get post paid, but they will do a credit check, and even if 1 company says no, another may say yes. |

With the pre-paid plans can you set up a direct debit type thing (where they automatically take the money out if your bank account on the 1st if each month)? I doubt I'll be able to get a post-paid plan initially then as I won't have build up any recognisable credit. Might be something I can look into later on though. |

And yes you want to make sure you have plans where you can recieve things for free. (Ie its included in the plan) Marketing calls count against mins too. I know not fun. But there are a select few and once you get the number, just add it to the "block" list on your iPhone and you will be OK. |

I have the Nexus 5 from Google - it's amazing. Cost me $460 after tax and delivery for the 32GB version. It's a fantastic phone - beautiful screen, blazing fast, absolutely no complaints. I'm so happy with it. (Since I bought mine, my brother and my best friend have also bought the N5 and are exceedingly happy with it.)
My husband decided to experiment and bought the Moto G, Motorola's $200 phone. He's also quite happy with it. He said the battery isn't THAT wonderful on it, but the phone otherwise works very well considering it's just a $200 thing. In the interest of kind of providing a summary of some description on what's been going on here: --Stay away from the Big3 (Rogers, Bell, Telus) as they charge the most. --If you're a light user, prepaid options are cheaper. If you're a heavier user, then contracts work out to be better value. --If you can, buy your phone up front - lots of options anywhere from $150 (Jsmth321's Sony Something, Husband's Moto G) to $800 (iPhone 5S, Galaxy 5, One M8), depending how fancy a phone you want. Hi, I have a Nexus 5 in UK, will it work with a Canadian sim card? Thanks. Will. |
