Re: Cheapest PAYG phone tariff in Canada please?
I pay $15.75 a month on my Iphone 4S with Bell which has good coverage around here................ I don't use internet much so only have 100MB of data with that but it does come with unlimited Canada and International Text messages.
I think it is reasonable value but certainly wouldn't want to be paying any more than that. |
Re: Cheapest PAYG phone tariff in Canada please?
Oink you may be almost ready for a floating water-proof phone. I like my contract - I don't have to pay; they just take the money out of the bank. Unlimited internet across Canada, unlimited local talk and text + free calls to any Sasktel mobile anywhere in Canada, 150 long distance minutes for US & Canada and it's about $73/month and I've never gone over. They replaced this plan with one that costs $5 more but I'm grandfathered in. Sasktel used to be nasty expensive but they gave in to competition some years ago.

Re: Cheapest PAYG phone tariff in Canada please?
Plans (particularly PAYGO/Prepaid) vary from province to province. So it depends on where you're headed.
I used prepaid for years, with the best plan for me being Virgin, sometimes Telus, as I didn't NEED a cell phone for other than emergencies ( of course, on the 3 occasions I actually had an emergency where I NEEDED to use the darn thing, there was no coverage ....) If I recall correctly, I paid 35$/month for unlimited CA/US texting, unlimited incoming calls from CA, free outgoing CA calls 6pm to 8am, around 200 free minutes were included. In the last year, my Requirements changed. I researched, & in my province, Virgin offered me the best deal: monthly contract including phone*, unlimited incoming/outgoing Canada/US calls, unlimited texting including international, 1 GB data, voice mail, for 50$/ month. I pay by direct debit. *As I don't use credit cards for this sort of stuff, & I refuse to authorise unnecessary credit checks, I was asked for a 400$ deposit, which I provided, & which was returned to me after 4 months of paying my bill on time. This might be helpful to know for new arrivals. I could have bought a cheaper phone outright for no deposit, with a much more restricted plan/contract. Which was actually my original idea. Virgin convinced me otherwise, & so far I'm pleased with the deal! S |

I'm on Prepaid (basically the equivalent of PAYG) with my unlocked phone. You pay a fee for one month of connectivity, depending how much you are going to use the phone, then you can add "boosters". So I'm on the $15/month base plan which is just service and unlimited texting including picture and international. I then just add 500 minutes ($25) and 1GB of data ($30, includes LTE) and run down those balances as I use them, since they don't expire. My phone is usually on wireless and I don't make or receive many calls, so this is working really well for me. My husband uses his phone a lot more. He went on Prepaid for awhile, then waited for Koodo to come out with a Double promotion, which they do about twice a year. So he signed up for their $45/month plan which is unlimited texting, 1GB data, 500 minutes, unlimited incoming, unlimited evenings and weekends from 5pm. We both also have Canada-wide calling (so no Canadian long distance). Neither of us have any complaints with Koodo. The coverage is good, the internet speed is good, LTE is included and not at a premium, and good customer service. No complaints at all. :) Good good good post Schnookololy. My brother is with Koodo on that exact plan. Very good for Donnykins's needs and would wholeheartedly recommend it. (Meself I am on a $70/mo plan with TELUS because I use my mobile almost all the time, I am literally never without it.) For prepaid and the contract option I recommend Koodo. They are the least ripoff carrier in Canada (and they are all ripoffs. In the UK on Virgin which uses EE you can get Unlimited talk, text and data for 20 pounds a month-now thats a deal.) Heads up-Broadband here is a ripoff too, although Rogers just lowered their internet prices so thats a little less painful, but not as good as 25 pounds a month Virgin 50Mbps unlimited broadband. PM me if you have any other questions about technology in Canada :) |

Re: Cheapest PAYG phone tariff in Canada please?
Is it possible for you to pay out right for a phone like $700/ $800 for am iPhone/ galaxy etc and then go onto a rolling contract (30 days)?
How much would I be looking at for a rolling contract with data, minutes and text and not having to pay to receive calls? In the UK I am with Vodafone and I get 500mb data, 300 minutes and unlimited texts for £18 ( yes I know I will get nothing as cheap as that in Canada) :frown: |

Yes, you can buy the phone outright and if you don't need or want an Apple/high end phone you can find Andriod phones for under 200 dollars, mine is a Sony something or other, and was only 140.

Wind looks good and mobility but am guessing coverage isn't great with that. Looking at it I can get a rolling contract with data, minutes and texts for $50 a month and just pay for the phone on top.
Thanks I might look into that as that is pretty cheap but I was going to treat myself to a Samsung galaxy. I've have an iPhone4 that I have had for 4 years and feel it is time to treat myself :) Me myself I have the iPhone 5S, and i would recommend that over the galaxy, it has a far superior fingerprint system, but if you're just looking for a change/ want to try the galaxy go ahead, its a decent phone too :) |
Re: Cheapest PAYG phone tariff in Canada please?
I have the Nexus 5 from Google - it's amazing. Cost me $460 after tax and delivery for the 32GB version. It's a fantastic phone - beautiful screen, blazing fast, absolutely no complaints. I'm so happy with it. (Since I bought mine, my brother and my best friend have also bought the N5 and are exceedingly happy with it.)
My husband decided to experiment and bought the Moto G, Motorola's $200 phone. He's also quite happy with it. He said the battery isn't THAT wonderful on it, but the phone otherwise works very well considering it's just a $200 thing. In the interest of kind of providing a summary of some description on what's been going on here: --Stay away from the Big3 (Rogers, Bell, Telus) as they charge the most. --If you're a light user, prepaid options are cheaper. If you're a heavier user, then contracts work out to be better value. --If you can, buy your phone up front - lots of options anywhere from $150 (Jsmth321's Sony Something, Husband's Moto G) to $800 (iPhone 5S, Galaxy 5, One M8), depending how fancy a phone you want. |
