CHARLESTON, S.C. — The gunman charged with killing nine people in an African American church was unrepentant and unashamed during a confession to police, espousing strong anti-black views to the officers questioning him, law enforcement officials said Friday.

Dylann Storm Roof not only confessed to causing the Wednesday night carnage in Charleston, but said he wanted his actions known, said the officials.

Again, do these sound like the actions of a sane person?

Why is it that every mass shooter is mentally ill. Are ISIS mental, was 9/11 an act of mentalist going bonkers on Radom planes?

No

These are cold calculated killers. But yes it is easy just to overlook them and catagarize them in a nice group and call them mental patients, if it helps you to justify what he did then yeh you can say he was ill and was not criminally accountable. We will just have to agree to disagree on this pal Ok

These are the ramblings of someone who has no knowledge of mental health.

At the risk of repeating myself for a third time, do the killers actions, both before and after the massacre, sound like the behavior of a rational/sane person?

Read my previous answers, rational no, sane ? More calculated and organised, is that how mental people work? U seem to know more about these things.

Why did he not just visit a church or mall nearby where he lived? I tell you why, because that church, and them poor souls would be the big headline he was looking for to promote his racism.

It's surprising that the anti-gun lobby in the US is not more vocal and effective. There should be a daily chart tracking gun related deaths in the US vs other G7 nations, and an attempt to build awareness and support for reducing gun rights. The NRA is clearly an powerful and dominant lobby, but there does not appear to be a serious counter lobby.

Incidentally, did anyone else think that the shooter bore something of a resemblance to Gareth in the UK version of "The Office"? [LOL smiley withheld for obvious reasons]

What's over looked is if this shooting was done by anyone other than a white person no one would be talking about mental health. News coverage would be wider and we'd have certain individuals on this forum on their usual anti-religious rants.

What I want to know is when are you white people going to start apologising for this man's actions. He is one of you after all?

As annoying as Piers Morgan is, he did a great job (IMO) on his CNN program in trying to elevate the issue, but nobody really cared.
30,000 gun related deaths a year, if i recall correctly. I think they're numb to it now.

Speculative at best.

When was the last time a non-white person went on a shooting spree in the US?

Piers Morgan is widely disliked that doesn't help either.

Unfortunately it needs to be high profile white people who are shot dead.

In a country with several assassinated presidents I'm not even sure that will be enough these days.

I guess there is always immigration for people who don't like it.

Depends on whether he belonged to a toxic religion or not. Contrary to popular belief, not all religions are equally benign.

This shooter appears to be racially motivated. He wore Rhodesian and apartheid flags on his jacket. Not sure if he was religious, he did attend the service.

Exactly!! Was the Charlie Hebdo murders classed as an act of mental crazy guys ? Oh no, hold on they was terror attacks. Which I agree, they was, just the same as this is.

The U.S. Have bigger issues than gun control and crazy people. They have a massive race issue staring them in the face that they are just ignoring. They did not even lower the confederate flag to half mast in Charleston

What is the difference between a shooting and perhaps a deranged teen planting a home made bomb in Boston by a marathon?

Perhaps one actually targeted a minority. That is all I can find other than the choice of weapon.

I did find this on Wikipedia. Is there killings missing on it?

Yes he is annoying and yes he did try. Probably not the right forum though, and not the right man for the job. I'm thinking of a more constant, less sensational educational campaign. Sober advertisements, news PR, social media, constantly feeding the shocking daily or weekly stats until Americans start taking notice.
