Can't say that I miss slimy pork pies and girlie quiche, but I wish at company do's in Canada somebody, just once, would use their imagination and think of something else to order instead of pizza. There are other foods, you know.

The answer is really quite simple. You can volunteer to do all the arrangements then you'll have no reason to complain about unimaginative Canucks.
If you're going to criticize something at least have the courage to present an alternative.

You make too many assumptions and jump the gun.
There are 6 of us in our division and each week we take it in turns to order Friday lunch. So we end up with 5 weeks pizza and 1 week something different when I order - like Greek on Wheels (don't know if this is just Ottawa) or even Thai sometimes.

It's not about the food, though, is it? For most North Americans, food is just fuel.

We've adopted the recipe for something someone brought to a potluck last December. Not all potluck is crap. We are very, very fussy about our food.

We do posh picnics here in Newfoundland - now part of the tourism experience:-

http://lighthousepicnics.sytes.net/

All served to you in a picnic basket, with a blanket, and hand squeezed lemonade in mason jars.

I don't know if it really is derived from that. I've googled, as you would expect me to do, and can't find a definitive answer. If it is from potlatch that then it has taken on a new meaning and possessions aren't exchanged, just supper, and the word potluck does imply what it means nowadays.

Potlatch I read about in the Canoe Museum in Peterborough. An excellent museum BTW and well worth a visit.

But of course I googled. It's a modern encyclopedia.

What do you expect when you don't tell the full story.
