Canadian Values

The interesting concept of "Canadian Values" has been a hot topic in the past few months. Can these be described unambiguously without being political and if so are these values consistently adhered to.
Is an independent judiciary and executive, and a democratically elected government no longer a practical illustration of Canadian values?

If Rob Ford and Mike Holmes and Don Cheery agree with something then you can be rest assured it represents a 'Canadian' value. Sorry, couldn't resist those 3 seem like the barometers of what is 'canadian' in its values.

It has? There was nothing about it on the BBC website.

Quite frankly that's the only place I look at the news, if it hasn't happened there, it hasn't happened ;)

Smile a lot, be superficially pleasant but keep a stack of daggers to use behind people's backs. Oh and go on about how frigging wonderful Canada is but spend 40% of the year in another country.

The impression I have received these past 7-8 weeks is that it has become a huge matter. The Conservative party contenders ( Dr Leitch?, Clemente, the biker dude et al...Leitch has a cute lisp) have raised it as a crucial be all end all, this 'values' thing. CBC have had several hours covering it as have the papers and on the web. The esteemed BBC know
better?

There's many a time I have been thrown the phrase "you can tell a Brit but cant tell him anything" over the 30 years Ive been here by way of introduction. Being personally disposed to education, even correction, I would genuinely appreciate an unambiguous, even if vague, definition of Canadian values, backed up with concrete examples. Can anyone please help?

Although not Canadian values in themselves several suggestions have been

Women have equal rights in Canada regardless of what you believe or your culture dictates.
We don't subscribe to Female Genital Mutilation
Follow Canadian laws
No forced marriages although Jessica Alba could force me to marry her
No polygamists
Respect for religious and sexual diversity
Must drink at least one Tim Hortons coffee per week
Q&A: Kellie Leitch on screening immigrants, niqabs and abortion

A good start is that Canadian values are not synonymous with Conservative Party values.

This and what I said, it's more western values as such

If we're talking about generalized cultural values I'd say the main one would be a combination of delusion and insecurity. Secondly then copy everything the US does but halfheartedly and then pretend you haven't.

Buy coffee at Tim Hortons

Visit Canadian Tire a few times a year

Believe the Tragically Hip are a good band

Those are the 3 pillars of being a "Canadian".

I can't say I know anything of the Conservative party contenders but aren't they irrelevant to Canadian politics? Trudeau is young, he could be in power for fifty years, these contenders will be long dead before they have a chance at power.

Mark Carney is steering The Old Lady of Threadneedle Street (on the wrong side of the street), and Tim Hortons are now opening up in the UK....perhaps even a stall in the house of commons!!. So some Canadian value products are being exported!! But still, other than the social requirements of a Timmie per day and perhaps the gait of an ice hockey player, everything else is enshrined in law. Are the laws not being applied? eh?

Even with their aphorisms Canadians are unoriginal.

I have a coffee mug (no, not that one) emblazoned on one side;

"How can you tell a Geordie" and on the other;

"Ye divn't. He canna be tellt."

Today was a lovely day in Newcastle (or it was when I got back here at about 2 pm) having spent Thursday in York visiting the Minster, the Treasurers House and the Theatre Royal in the evening and then Friday visiting the Goddards, Fountains Abbey and the Studley Royal water gardens then this morning a visit to the Mount Grace Priory on the way home.

The Fog on the Tyne is a ditty composed by Alan Hull, a former friend of mine and the force behind the group Lindesfarne.

It's good to be home.

I don't know if this law is still on the books but did you see any of our Scottish cousins in York and not on a Sunday?
In York, it is legal to murder a Scotsman within the ancient city walls, but only if he is carrying a bow and arrow.

As Dr. Johnson said " Much can be made of a Scotsman if he be caught young enough".

I did see a Canadian though. It was embarrassing.

Nice tune! I'll take my laptop to the club with me the next while and when she comes in I''ll play that for my Novocastrian friend in the wheelie-chair, she'll probably love hearing Geordie again. We've done the virtual tour of her landmarks with her driving the little gold street-view man but a lot has changed since she left.

Well it will have done. Tell you what, ask your friend what bits she'd like to see again in the present and I'll shoot some pics for her.

It's actually a lack of national maturity. Give it another century and Canada will start feeling more secure about its place in the world. However, as Oink notes, there is a whiff of hypocrisy with the vacation thing.
