Canadian Olympic 'athletes'.

That's why I cheered for Canada in the Hockey at the winter games. Along with the Canadians in the family.
Remembering, of course, that would be sixth out of many hundreds rather than sixth out of eight. Would you be one of those glass half empty folk who call the runners up medals in football "losers'" medals?

Use to cringe when the ex use to tell my very competitive daughters "it's OK that you lost but did you have fun" - never had much fun losing.

Awesome, seriously and you're not alone. I've mellowed with age but as a kid wasn't interested in coming in second or third, nevermind 6th. It is the Olympics though so maybe that makes a difference.

Second place means you are #1 loser.

This has just made me think of something.
It's long been said that it's very much a British attitude to think of a "place" as doing well and not having a winners attitude.
The Americans are generally considered to have a winning attitude.
Which makes it quite funny that movies and actors are described as Oscar nominated. That means they were "losers" but now they're using it to promote something.

"You know, I'm just happy to be here..."
If I hear another Canadian athlete utter those words I will throw darts at the tv screen.

Could you cheer for them?
I couldn't in good conscience, but maybe if they are in direct competition with Americans.
What also gets me is their celebration of mediocrity, which I think is endemic to their wider culture. "They [Canadian athletes] made the finals" but you know what, they'll come in sixth so its rubbish.

And just 'cos they are sixth this year, doesn't mean they won't be third or first another year. I am a gold medal armchair critic and I really enjoy the Olympics, so bah humug to the lot of you, grumpy old gits.

On the point of the word 'athletes' being presented in quotes, this is a good explanation of what happened in the dodgy badminton matches the other night:
