Someone on the radio was saying that the olympics should only have events where a world record exists. Raises all kinds of possibilities - Fastest mobility scooter, pogo stick jumping, wing eating.

Yeah... it's just to generate interest. The assumption is that Canadians will be more interested if they "bang on about" Canadian athletes. I think the media overdid it, especially as Canada doesn't even compete very well in the summer sports overall. But I don't think it's a "celebration of mediocrity" as you so condescendingly put it in your original post so much as a simple attempt to generate interest for ratings.
