Remembering, of course, that would be sixth out of many hundreds rather than sixth out of eight. Would you be one of those glass half empty folk who call the runners up medals in football "losers'" medals?

I competed at fairly high level in sports when I was younger and apart from the first few, always threw away any silver or bronze medals I received.

Awesome, seriously and you're not alone. I've mellowed with age but as a kid wasn't interested in coming in second or third, nevermind 6th. It is the Olympics though so maybe that makes a difference.

Use to cringe when the ex use to tell my very competitive daughters "it's OK that you lost but did you have fun" - never had much fun losing.

For little kids its one thing, but once you're 12 or so then you need to only think of putting the effort in to win.

Second place means you are #1 loser.

Haha - I guess then you can at least say you're No.1

This has just made me think of something.

It's long been said that it's very much a British attitude to think of a "place" as doing well and not having a winners attitude.

The Americans are generally considered to have a winning attitude.

Which makes it quite funny that movies and actors are described as Oscar nominated. That means they were "losers" but now they're using it to promote something.

"You know, I'm just happy to be here..."

If I hear another Canadian athlete utter those words I will throw darts at the tv screen.

I couldn't in good conscience, but maybe if they are in direct competition with Americans.
What also gets me is their celebration of mediocrity, which I think is endemic to their wider culture. "They [Canadian athletes] made the finals" but you know what, they'll come in sixth so its rubbish.

What's rubbish is the uniforms. The Italians kitted out their athletes in Armani and their whole economy is in the toilet. Who outfitted the Canucks? The Bay!! They might as well all wear Roots jerseys. Keep it nice and cheap. :D

The Bay? They looked like Giant Tiger.

To reach these high standards, even if you are 'only' sixth in the whole world is great and well done to all of them. And just 'cos they are sixth this year, doesn't mean they won't be third or first another year.

I am a gold medal armchair critic and I really enjoy the Olympics, so bah humug to the lot of you, grumpy old gits. :p

On the point of the word 'athletes' being presented in quotes, this is a good explanation of what happened in the dodgy badminton matches the other night:
