I slammed on the brakes, but it was too late and we gave him a right old wallop. He lay completely still on the road for about 30 seconds, and then staggered up, roared and limped off back into the woods.

There was no signal to phone anyone of course, but later on we phoned the rangers who called back that night to say they were out with dogs looking for the bear. Unfortunately there was definitely a significant blood trail for them to follow.

All rather shaken and upset. To be honest, I'd rather have killed the bear outright than watch it stagger off badly hurt.

Oh how sad. I think its all too common- I read in a banff paper how a bear I think we saw of the icefields parkway got hit recently by a car.

Hope you both feel better about it now its a few days on.

To update thread as well. Have now spent 5 nights in canvas and didn't get eaten by bears. Phew. Didn't sleep much either though!!!

No we didn't hear anything back. I did wonder if we'd maybe get a phone call to say they'd found it, but in reality I suppose they've got far better things to worry about.

Planning to head down Waterton way this coming long weekend. Hope the bears there know their Green Cross Code!

Lots of grizzlies in waterton. Be careful. The walk from the red rock to the waterfalls is nice and worthwhile.
