I just Googled Sarcee. It's an old term for the Tsuu T'ina. Probably Blackfoot in origin meaning "stubborn ones".

So hardly First Nations rebranding. Just renaming. BTW, 'Indian' is also considered offensive in Canada and the er, tribes are called nations or bands.

Oo, and Canada is an Iroquois word meaning village.

I dunno about this, you sure it's not political correctness gone mad?

Indians I know here usually refer to themselves as Indians, sometimes as Natives. I suppose that might be language reclaimation but they've been doing it since I've known them, getting on for 30 years. They also use "reserve" and "reservation" interchangably to refer to their homeland (or whatever we're now supposed to call an area of poor farmland where the descedants of the pre-colonial population operate casinos and cigarette shops).

I suspect the language used by the public includes Indian while that used by the government does not. I wouldn't hestitate to use Indian in conversation in Canada though I'd usually follow it up with "native Indian" so as to differentiate from actual Indians, from India.

My info comes from a Cree and an Ojibway. They use 'native' too but said they hated the term 'Indian'. Reserve, rather than reservation, and definitely band not tribes. I use the terms the potentially offended tell me they prefer.

Probably like black people in the States using the "n" word (not natives). If the white man uses it, it's derogatory but it's ok to use it among themselves.

Since I have a couple of "Indian" friends that prefer not to be called East Indians, the Natives are the Natives.

normally we talk about First Nations around here.

I don't know. I don't know what's right.

The Government uses the word indian. I think FN is a bit of political correctness amongst us white men but like ExKiwi don't really know.

I've met indians who refer to themselves as indians (and not just at the local tandoori)!

I asked my cousins (FN) if they disliked team names like Redskins etc. They weren't particularly bothered.

From the looks of it they're aiming for November 1st and I'm not sure it will be ready then, the westbound exit onto Stoney Trail from northbound Deerfoot looks pretty far from being finished. And even if they are finished then the province still has to do their inspections, so God knows.

And looks as though the ground will start to freeze on Monday...

they're making fast progress on the bits they are building...

i come onto Stoney Eastbound from the Harvest Hills On-Ramp and the speed limit decrease from 100-80 has been moving up further on the daily!

Well they're still messing about with the flyover on MacLeod, how can they still be working on that? It's just a bridge upgrade.

They are changing a two lane bridge into a four lane one. They started it a couple of months ago. How quickly do you want them to finish it (bearing in mind how long the one across the Bow on 22x took to complete)?

They built and entire new bridge for that one and changed the existing one to two lanes in one direction.

IIRC it was being built during our recce trips and finished sometime after we had arrived. Too long if you ask me but I honestly can't remember;)
