Is it really this bad in the UK or is it just a boring news day

It's awful. 100mph+ winds and torrential rain. The little village in Cornwall where we have a house has made the news repeatedly, evacuated and various things destroyed. We're going down on Friday for a week and I'm dreading seeing the damage.

Numerous floods around us, 2 out of the 3 routes from our village have been shut off for about 2 weeks now.

Hard to believe that last February half term the kids were running around the beach with no clothes on because it was so warm.

So yeah, to answer your question, it's a bit s@*^!

Hi
We're in south Devon, the last 2-3 mths has been rain...with possibly 3 days of clearer skies...otherwise the last 5-ish weeks have been back to back storms.
Somerset levels has been under water for weeks and getting worse.

We have an area of farm land that floods every year and even the migrating Canada geese have by-passed it!

We've got 70-80 mph winds with worse coming friday so the Met office says!

From what I gather, most places I lived for the last twenty years in the UK are under water now. According to one news story, one of them has set up vigilante patrols to discourage looters because so many people have abandoned their houses and the police are useless.

At least when Sasaktoon gets bad weather, the water runs out of our development and floods the one down the road .

This article brought home to me how bad things are and how ineffective the government is being.

Yes, it's really bad. I was talking to my sister today (she lives in Kent) and she was telling me that there have been high winds and rain; sinkholes appearing all over the place and dreadful flooding everywhere. She said some people have had flooding since before Christmas and the Govt. have stated that it will take weeks for all the water to drain away even if it stops raining - which is unlikely.

These pictures are just shocking.

Even when I was there for a few days around Christmas, it was rain, rain and... more rain. We had to drive slow on many of the country roads because the puddles were deep enough that you wouldn't want to hit them at speed.

Horrendous. Most rain since 1766 and floods everywhere. Oh, and a bit gusty today...

The DM has some photos.

My in-laws live in Berkshire where the red warnings are currently in place. Their house hasn't flooded (yet), but they have pre-emptively gotten everything in their basement off the ground and are just keeping an eye on things to make sure the house doesn't flood. So far so good, but definitely on edge.

Hopefully there are no human casualties in all of this...

Christmasoompa, keeping my fingers crossed for you that your house isn't in too bad shape!!

Thank you. Fingers crossed for your in-laws too, whereabouts in Berkshire are they? We're in Berks but thankfully our house isn't at risk of flooding.

Watching the news tonight, it's so upsetting. We get used to the weather on our benign little island being nothing worse than grey and rainy, so the scale of this is something else.

Good weather graphic on the news tonight (BBC) showing a shift in the jet stream which has brought this conveyer belt of storms. Let's hope it's not the shape of winters to come.

We are alternating from one day wind and rain, next day sunny and breezy with an occasional shower, today we had the rain, tomorrow it's sunny and showery. Fortunately we are high ground here in Bournemouth, so no flooding problems.

A man has died apparently trying to clear a fallen tree as hurricane-force winds batter parts of the UK.

The dead man, believed to be in his 70s, was killed after the tree brought down power cables in Wiltshire.

Ditto, it was quite miserable at xmas for "holiday" - luckily Xmas, booze, shopping and curries diverted our attention , and the in-laws (and you guys) confirm it's been virtually non-stop ever since. Feel bad seeing all the footage. What a mess.
