OH earned himself a few points by bringing back a kilo bag of mini eggs from his last trip to Costco and I can't leave them alone....so I had the breakfast of champions; a large handful of mini eggs and a coffee!

Dead easy.

Put some yeast in a bit of water until it starts frothing. Add flour and some salt and mix to a dough. Bung it in the oven with the pilot light on for an hour or so until it doubles in size. Knead, shape into a loaf. Bung back in the oven for 20 mins or so until it has doubled in size again and bake at 200 C/400 F.

Here is a[good basic bread recipe http://www.jamieoliver.com/recipes/b...c-bread-recipe

But this one is a no-knead one that is even easier. No breadmachines or fancy gadgets needed.... http://www.foodnetwork.ca/recipes/re...ml?dishid=9530

I find there is still a bit of a snobby attitute that prevails against bread machines as foodies seem to think it's cheating! (no implication towards anyone here;) ) Maybe it is but if it makes life easier then I'm all for it:p

Early models did produce pretty weird looking loaves with a big hole in the bottom where the paddle is located. However mine creates a pretty good looking loaf rather than a flowerpot and minus the crater (the paddle collapses!)

If you want something a bit more artisan that guests think you hand kneaded from a Nigella recipe then simply put on a dough setting and then cook yourself.

You do need to make minor adjustments to the recipes for eg to allow for altitude here in Alberta you need to add a little more liquid to the recipe. I personally would not recommend leaving on an overnight setting unless you want something resembling cake for breakfast!

With the time constaints of busy family life I love my breadmaker

For me it has nothing to do with being snobby or even that I think it is cheating (hey if it works for you great!). I used to own a bread maker, and I didn't like the way the bread tasted - it had this "weird" taste that you don't get with bread made longhand (maybe I just like the way handmade bread tastes?).

Besides, I don't see the need for a separate machine to knead and bake my bread when I already own a stand-mixer and an oven that are perfectly able to cope with doing that. Plus, I like to be able to make bread rolls for the kids and Mr Chookie's packed lunches - if I was using a bread machine I would have to shape, raise and bake them myself... ie nothing different to what my kitchenaid does....

And as for busy family life.... I have that too - 4 kids, one hubby, both Mr Chookie and I work, I am in school 1 day a week (plus extra school work - writing up case study, practicum etc), we have 2 dogs, 2 cats.... busy, busy, busy in our house. but I do find time to bake bread - mostly I do it in the evening while doing research for my case-study paper.... I am sat at the kitchen table anyway, so it is no hardship to have a couple of loaves of bread and a dozen bread rolls in the oven.

A nice piece of the apple pie I made last night. And before anyone says anything, Canadians eat donuts for breakfast, at least this has fruit in it.

A friend gave me some deer meat yesterday so I just had a great big steak and eggs with toast breakfast.:D. I had to use the 22“ Analon skillet and found that with a bit of care I can break eggs almost lengthwise, to avoid confrontation.

Cup of tea and a toasted & buttered hot cross bun. Lovely. Have been on a quest to find some this year as last year I was not impressed with the stodgy/heavy ones I could find. This year though, a pack of 8 from Sobeys - the Sunshine brand. Very good, plus also my local bakery do some really nice ones. Keep selling out though. Must get up earlier.

Here's an article on full English breakfasts. Although I suspect the blogger is a bit posh as he used the word 'indigestible' and there was no mention of the compulsory fag in the mug hand while reading the egg and brown sauce stained Sun or Mirror. But it is breakfast related.

Full English

What kind of protein shake do you buy? I got one called IsoGold but it has artificial sweetener in it and doesn't agree with me. Although for the $70 I'll force the stuff down. :(

Re: Breakfast Choices

Have to be careful with the protein shakes - the majority of them use Soy as the protein source, and Soya contains chemicals that mimic estrogen. Not good, particularly if you're male.

Mine's mostly whey and it has less than 1% soya.

BSN Synthia 6, strawberry flavour. It's the tastiest one i've had.

This protein shake stuff is for those trying to bulk up or uber-fitness types aren't they? Why would a normal mortal have one? Genuine question.

Yes! I am always amazed when some big old sort comes out of Zumba after not breaking a sweat and starts gulping down a protein shake! That's prob more calories than I have in a whole day!

I use them after my weight-training workouts to help with building muscle.

My point entirely. It seems that a certain percentage of the population regards them as some sort of wonder food that alone will reduce weight without all the bother of actually working out. In a similar vein, The Goodlife gym I drag myself to once or twice a week has a booster juice smoothy place attached to it. The inference being that after your workout you grab a refreshing and healthy smoothy with all that fruit and powershot thingamummy in it. I've not checked the nutitional info, but rather suspect that they are not as healthy as all that!

Certainly not trying to "bulk up" rather simply trying to slow down the inevitable degradation brought on by time.

Not sure about the health option with the Booster Juice but i find them a good breakfast bet when a particularly bad Screech or Lambs hangover is kicking in :)

Hangover breakfasts could be a thread by itself. A fried egg and bacon sandwich usually does the trick for me. Booster Juice would be too much acid for my constitution when hungover.

This morning it‘s a big bacon sandwich with ketchup and Frank‘s Red Hot. You bulk up how you want, and so shall I.
