I don't think there is a policy either official or unofficial. As you can tell from the comments up thread we did have an interesting experience the one time someone brought along a Canadian friend. He seemed to feel the need to get very drunk and entertain everyone. He was spectacularly successful in one of those endeavours and equally unsuccessful in the other one. I say bring him along, but you might want to warn him if he hasn't spent an evening in a pub with a bunch of Brits before.
