Yes, it really is about people (or more accurately "the media") trying to impose opinions on others. In this case it's the widely held belief that all UKIP people are nutters. I wouldn't even go as far as saying it's a childish or silly phrase, it has a rather amusing ring to it. Especially as it's a non-existent place. I'm sure the inhabitants of Bongo Bongo Land have an equally descriptive term for po-faced European countries too. Which is good, enjoy the language!

On the other hand, Jungle Land doesn't exist but racists will still use it to describe an area of town populated mainly by black people.

That aside, a previous use of the expression created a right old stink for the politician involved.

What's the excuse for a subsequent politician to use the same expression? Ignorance? Stupidity? Contempt?

Perhaps he's simply not been brainwashed into boring political correctness. For better or worse, there are millions of people just like him in the country.

PCism has gone way too far for too long. It's often an overreaction.

But this expression is on a par with Jim Davidson and his nig-nog IMO.

If it's something I wouldn't be comfortable saying to my black friends it isn't acceptable. I am the national standard and it's a no go.

I'm loving this - you're saying that because you personally don't approve, it is not acceptable?

Thank you, I think the problem is more likely from being half from Prussian origins, via southern Ukraine. Those are the little wind-up Germans.

The MEP said the expression was "not racist at all" because the dictionary defined the "bongo" as a white forest-dwelling animal.
"If anybody would care to take the trouble to get out the Oxford dictionary this morning and look it up, you'll find that bongo is a white antelope, lives in the forest, there is no connotation of racism about it whatsoever," he said. "Bongo land is the land of the antelope.
Riiiight.

So he was really talking about sending money to the land of the white antelope, then.

Now it all makes sense, he's not using insensitive language after all, he's just away with the fairies.

Best not to vote for him I suppose.

Those that are stating that the choice of words was wrong, or just those that have a different opinion to you, whatever that opinion is?

People who talk about 'PC going mad' are just about always outdated, racist cretins.
