My mum used to make lovely chocolate cake with something chocolatey between two slices, choc on top with maltesers dotted around the top.

Sounds just like this one that I made for my chocolate obsessed Mum for Mothers Day a couple of weeks ago. It was delicious! Mary Berry's Absolute Favourites: Malted chocolate cake | Daily Mail Online

Yes, similar. My mum's had a chocolate bar melted and spread over for the topping though.

Okay, as promised, here are pics of previous bear-themed cakes.

The first bear cake was from 2012, that one is the one that's just a bear in icing on a normal chocolate cake.

The 2013 bear cake I went a bit more all-out and attempted to build a 3D bear. It mostly worked... enough that the sentiment was appreciated, haha. I have not included the 2014 bear cake as I made Husband's mum's banana cake that she always makes for his birthday, then I used sliced bananas to make a bear outline on top of the cake, however my icing was way too thin and the bananas ended up mostly slipping off, so it ended up being a botox-bear cake as I had to put in about 20 toothpicks to hold the bananas in place, haha. Not bothering to include that one.

I thought the bear's eyes were glowing on the third picture. Some sort of demon bear?

Hahahha no, the bear is holding the two candles!

Demon bear will be an interesting challenge. Perhaps Husband gets that as next year's birthday cake.

The Bears look really great. Bananas on a cake would be rather tricky as they're slippy suckers, royal icing should do it though for future ref!

I'm looking forward to demon cake in March 2016..........
