The Paps, located in the vicinity of Killarney, Co. Kerry, Ireland are a unique prehistoric monument. The mountains are probably several hundred feet high, and are part of the foothills to MacGillicudy's Reeks. The stone monuments on the summit are on the order of 20 to 50 feet in height. The oral history of the region suggests that these monuments have long been known as the Paps of Danu. According to Professor Myles Dillon in "The Celts" Ed. Joseph Rafferty, Mercier Press, Cork and Dublin 1964, the Paps are Da Chich nAnann and probably date to pre-Christian, pre-Celtic, indigenous Irish cultures. The Paps probably date from a sedentary stone age or perhaps bronze age farmer culture perhaps from 5,000 to 10,000 years ago. They most likely are meant to honor the fertility of the mother-earth god, or earth mother D'Anann the principle deity of the original people of Ireland the Tuatha de D'Anann, and who is was believed to be the mother of all pagan gods. |
