So considering they can't print money it does tie their hands a bit. Sort of like Greece.

To those who deserve it YES to those who prefer to sit around all day drinking and cant be arsed to go out and find a job then it becomes a different matter.
All provinces have these and when these payments are high enough it doesnt make sense to them to go out and find a job be it minimum wage or even $14 an hour as they feel they have more money collecting benefits as opposed to working.

Soak the rich and borrow from our decendents to provide them now. Or, make the services more efficient (aka not providing them).

I find it hard to believe that anyone of sound mind and body would choose to live on welfare.

I had a bit of a google but couldn't find much about it. Does the province offer their own bonds? I have various US state bonds and although they're at a lower rate the interest is tax free.

I don't think there are BC bonds. By borrowing from our decendents I meant financing current account expenditure by running a deficit.

A provincial government could raise the necessary money through income taxes.

Then there was the $400m the last NDP govt. spent on ferries that did not work (which they were told before they had them built). That's $400m that could have gone to social programs!

Now we'd all be better off if we'd kept HST, but a minority of voters opted to get rid of it and we're all paying higher taxes. Effective rate of 14% on most things we buy than than food. We could have had 10% HST.

I wasn't here, and I dont blame the current party for past issues, just because a party made an error in the past does not mean they will repeat it.

The liberals have been in power the entire I have been in BC, and I can't say its been a pleasant experience, not like there are all that many jobs at the moment, only place one can work these days in the west is Alberta, and if I had the means that is where I would be going.

Many people on welfare are on it because they can't work or unable to find a job that will accommodate their medical needs.

Even disability is piss poor level of 906 a month, is this how we should treat the disabled in this province?

Yes those who can work should have limits, and lower rates, but for those who cant work due to medical issues, they deserve a payment that can at-least keep them from living on the streets or destitute.

Not only that, but you are also allowed to work while on welfare up to a certain amount, so the system here hardly encourages people to live on welfare.

I've learned from playing Empire: Total War that you can only do this so much before the residents get very unhappy.

Unfortunately there are also those who know how to play the system and get money when they don't need it, so those that do need help there is less to go around.

+1

A civilised wealthy society should not tolerate destitution.
