A Canadian thing. The ball bearing is about 2mm diameter. It is used to identify the nipple on the film, to clarify when there is doubt over whether or not the appearances are the nipple or something more sinister. It's also used as QA thing to show that all the breast is on the film.
Sometimes patients need to return for a chest image with nipple markers. This is also because a shadow may need clarifying. It seems a good idea to do that straight off as it could save any return journeys for the second films.
