Average commute?
So, what is your average commute? and do you drive, walk/cycle or take public transport?? As a second question what would be your typical monthly mileage in canada
My feeling is that canadians commute less distance than UK residents.
eg: my shortest commute in the UK - 8 miles each way, longest 220 miles but only for short contract and with a stayover between commutes. I drove or took train
my canadian commute, 2 miles, usually walk or cycle depending on weather
My typical monthly mileage (in Km) 800-1000km

It takes me 45mins+ to get from Fall River to Downtown Halifax setting off @ 7.30am ~ 20kms
There's no public transport availalbe from Fall River, so gas all the way

I drove 75 miles each way for a year and a half, typically three and a quarter hours in the car each day. Then 50 miles, an hour, each way. I tired of that and now walk for 10 minutes each way.
Most people around me drive 60 miles or so each way though half a dozen commute by plane from Atlanta, Kansas City, St. Louis, Chicago, all over.

Received wisdom from anyone I've ever talked to in SW Ontario is that massive (90min+ each way) commutes are the norm. Outside of cities, commuting will be an entirely automobile based pursuit. (Unless you cycle or walk I guess.)
My commute is about 10k and takes 25mins tops including dropping my daughter off at daycare. My annual mileage is much lower than in the UK (around 12k kilometers vs. 12k miles) but thats more about only being able to drive so far before you fall of the edge of The Rock.

Around 5 minutes for both me and Mr Cookie. Living and working in the same town is great, although Mr Cookie can do a fair bit of travelling around Northern NS and NB in his job. At least he drives a company vehicle, using company fuel and is on the clock then.

Re: Average commute?
20-25 mins if I take the streetcar (10 minutes of walking, a few minutes hanging around and about 8-10 mins on the streetcar.)
In the UK I drove 100 miles a day, and was in the car just over 2 hours a day. I much prefer it here.
Saying that however, many people in my office are commuting shorter distances than I did in the UK, but it takes longer around Toronto.

10 minute drive - about a couple of kilometers or so. Mr. PrettyFlowers spent all last night espousing the joys of walking to work
I know I should take the TTC (Toronto Public Transport) or walk, but I like driving more than is strictly good for me...

2 min roll down the hill in my car, then 25 mins on the train to downtown Calgary. Other than skiing, vacations, etc. that is the extent of my travelling.

Re: Average commute?
OH has a ten minute commute and mine is either 5 minutes or 15 minutes depending on which shop. These commutes include walking out the door and scraping/brushing ice and snow off the car and dithering around as one does before setting off for the day

18km drive which usually takes 20 minutes - there's a set of traffic lights on the route which can slow you down. I've also had a 55km/50 minute commute and a 60km/45min commute.
In the UK I've had commutes ranging from a 30 minute walk to a 2 hour drive.

For me, it is a 10 minute walk across the playpark - it it is so close that it is just not worth getting the car out.
Mr Chookie drives and it takes around 20-30 mins depending on traffic. But up to about 6 months ago, he worked Downtown, so he used to use public transport - caught the bus at the end of our road, about 30 minutes on the bus and got off at a stop right outside the building he worked in.

3 minutes in the car to Clarkson GO, express to Union 22 minutes, 7 or 8 minutes walk to the office. The way home is slightly longer as I do daycare pickup.
It's actually easier than my NS commute was from Fall River to Halifax.
The worst I did in the UK was driving a couple of hours each way from Basingstoke to Acton.

Re: Average commute?
When I lived downtown it was a ten minute walkd to the office.
Now I live in Maple Ridge it would be about 90 mins each way - mostly I can't be arsed and work from home.
