South of the border government doing anything vaguely related to ensuring good healthcare is considered socialist. That speech Pain quoted in the debate
"...you and I are going to spend our sunset years telling our children, and our children's children, what it once was like in America when men were free." was taken from a speech by Ronald Reagan on protecting democracy in the face on... introducing Medicare

One persons small government is another persons socialism it would seem.

I lived in California when Reagan was the Governor. This was when he announced that smog was caused by trees. His subsequent election as President, coinciding unfortunately with the Thatcher regime in the UK, was to my mind the end of the Age of Reason, leading inevitably to things like GWB, Palin, Harper, Blair, Rove, Cheney and Enron.

So far, the morons, charlatans and thieves have had, since then, a prolonged winning streak, but now could be the moment when decency and morality reassert itself in the Anglo-American capitalist world.

At least I like to think so.

I admire your optimism, but dont share it.

Its a shame they chose the wrong Palin. Michael would have made a much better job, and brought in some just plain niceness.
