I would have thought that the choice of firearm depended on the intended usage. Handguns are for killing people, other types of firearms have a wider range of potential usage (killing animals, not just people). In rural areas there's a greater chance of wanting to kill animals so there will be more illegal weapons in cities than in the country.
Gun collectors perhaps for whatever their reason of wanting a particular firearm. AK47s M16s etc etc serve no other purpose unless in the hands of the military but yet other people want them Why? Now a 30.06 bolt action is useful for knocking over a moose or bear. Of course the urban gangsta needs to be seen with his Glock or Tec 9 so he can look cool and reek havoc outside a shopping mall say in Scarborough or other parts of the GTA. |
Re: Another US school shooting
Very sad day unfortunately nothing at all will happen as a consequence of today's tragedy ...large scale killings like these do get massive headlines (quite rightly) but the US gun culture has always been completely out of control... I think the stats a few years ago were something like 12500 gun homicides in US, 170 in Canada (despite highest gun owning total per capita), 68 in UK....... yet somehow nothing is ever done about gun control in US.............. :(

Barak is wiping tears, wonderful speaker

Re: Another US school shooting
I expect the US politicians will soon be on TV expressing their shock at how this could happen.

I agree. You let people get away with an extra bottle of booze in their suitcase and before you know it they're shooting up a school. It's a slippery slope all right, and it's very important that you use stories about murdered children in another country nowhere near the border to highlight just how important your job is.
BTW I didnt initially bring up this to show how or how not important my job is. As highlighted in the RCMP report a lot (vast majority) of murders committed in Canada by handgun use are from those hanguns smuggled into Canada. There again in your world this is not a problem that needs to be dealt with either in the US or Canada. Yes this shooting happened in the US far away from the border but whats the betting if this had occurred in Canada what chances do you think that the firearms involved would have been smuggled into Canada or would they have nipped over to the nearest farmhouse and nicked a couple of the farmers rifles/shotguns to carry out an act such as this. You carry on reading over your financial reports and I will carry on doing my job. |
Re: Another US school shooting
Obama is on TV right now expressing regrets and saying god bless the victims.....next week no doubt he will be protecting US citizens right to keep and bear arms...... ludicrous ...... he needs to pry open a few cold dead hands.

Actually strong words in context, we will have to wait to see what they really mean. |

Good luck to him, I hope he has the resolve to make something happen, but with partizan politics and gun possession an article of US faith Im not holding my breath. I think fixing the US fiscal issues is probably an easier task, but he's ultimately fairly powerless on both fronts. He does seem a fundamentally decent bloke though and I hope he can make a difference. My kids will be getting extra hugs. I cant imagine being a parent in Newtown tonight. I dont want to. |

Very sad :(

Re: Another US school shooting
There will be tears shed emotional speeches, enquiries, committees convened, public outrage blah blah blah but will anything be done probably not. They will introduce a few new minor amendments to existing legislation but ultimately **** all will be done.
Mentally disturbed, insane persons and criminals will always find a way to acquire guns be it legally or illegaly. Look at what happened with the Canadian Gun Registry fiasco. Guns dont kill people. People with guns kill people. Lay a gun on a desk and nothing will happen it wont leap up on its own and start firing at innocent people. Now put that gun in the hands of a person and see what happens. |
