Anyway I disagree. I think that if you distill my point to it's core essence many people will actually agree with me. Give the families a bit of cash instead - I wouldn't begrudge them it.

I don't. Plus, if it was all being funded privately, it'd be splashed all over the newspapers. You know from your involvement in the CBSA, that the default motivation of any public institution is survival and growth. That means funding and that comes from relevance, so I doubt the RCMP would miss a public relations bonanza like that.

Secondly, this thread was not hijacked from a condolences type one. It was purpose built to discuss this topic. Unless, as Cookie did, one is engaging in personal attacks I don't see much of a problem with it.

In all, seven planes loaded with police officers from across Canada and the United States flew into Moncton on Tuesday morning. Law enforcement officers from other countries, such as Great Britain, are also at the funeral.

Air Canada did provide 2 charter flights to transport some RCMP to Moncton from Toronto and Ottawa free of charge.

This morning, we operated two charter flights with Airbus A319 aircraft from Toronto and Ottawa to Moncton, to accommodate law enforcement officers travelling to pay their respects to their colleagues who recently lost their lives in the line of duty.

Our employees associated with these charters, both from the operation and behind the scenes, volunteered their support while our industry partners including the associated airport authorities, Imperial Oil, Gate Gourmet and Nav Canada waived their fees and costs associated with these special flights to be able to offer the RCMP transportation at no cost.

“Air Canada and its employees are proud to facilitate the transportation of law enforcement officers from across Canada to pay their respects to their RCMP colleagues who recently lost their lives in the line of duty in Moncton, NB.,” said Calin Rovinescu, Air Canada President and CEO. “In particular, I salute the employees involved in this mission, from those who immediately volunteered to operate and handle these flights, to those who worked around the clock on short notice to put together the logistics and operational plan. In the wake of such a senseless tragedy, these actions speak volumes of our respect and thoughts that are with the families and loved ones.”

In addition to the two charter flights, we added an extra scheduled flight to Moncton, and are facilitating commercial travel arrangements for additional law enforcement personnel travelling by making lower fares available to them for last minute travel to Moncton and nearby airports in New Brunswick.

Don't know how many were staying over but there was an appeal for volunteer hosts to "billet" those staying overnight. The organisers had more than the number of volunteers needed very quickly and had to tell people still calling that they had their needs covered already.

They'll all be well looked after and there is a fund over and above what would be the usual.

You might be misjudging how people feel about it. Living here it's clear to me that a bigger picture is involved for the community.

Good on them!

This coverage, along with other links I've seen, is incredibly moving.

I'm not a fan of police forces in general, nor of ostentatious state ceremonies held for political gain.

I can & do respect the symbolism & ceremony deployed for this funeral.

My thoughts are with the survivors, & the bereaved families tonight.

Not that it matters at all. The fact is that the cost to tax payers of this boondoggle is more than nothing. If everyone who thinks it's a good idea could put their hands in their pockets and cover that cost that would be great.

These police officers died doing their jobs....full ceremonial funerals like this are the norm for police and fire fighters killed in the line of duty, in this country and in any other first world country. I thought it was extremely sad, I don't think money comes into the equation.

Talking of which Im sure the wives of these police officers will be well taken care of financially, as their husbands were killed in the line of duty.

Very sad indeed, and I don't begrudge them the full ceremonial funeral they were given one bit.

Bloody immigrants coming over here and moaning about Canadian culture.

If you don't like the way that Canada honours Police officers killed in the line of duty, then fack off back to where you came from and honour their system instead.

I couldn't give a rats arse how much the funeral cost, police officers hold a unique place of trust and respect within Canadian society. It comes not as a surprise, therefore, that when a police officer dies he or she is paid special respect and honour and the funeral service is conducted with tradition and ceremony.

3 officers attended from EPS, on their own time, not compensated, flights I believe covered through our association which we all pay into, no public funds. I can't speak for all officers obviously, but I should imagine this would be the situation for most if not all of them.

There are several provisions in place for family members caught in such tragic circumstances, they will be well cared for whether a large or small funeral took place.

Ultimately 3 people have died tragically and suddenly, I despair at situations like this being hijacked by police haters. If you don't like the police for whatever reason that's fine and your right, but I don't see the need for the poison to spill into this domain.
