2014 Gas price moaning thread

http://gasbuddy.com is a useful and interesting site where one can research local gas prices. If I look back over the past 48 months for Newfoundland, we're nearing peak gas prices again. Which is a worry.

1.46 this morning, up 16 cents/liter since last week.
We are always about the same price as Vancouver, no advantage to living outside trans link's tax area.

A simple bit of analysis:
Gas is GBP 1.30 a litre in UK so thats about $2.4 a litre in C$ (using $1.85=GBP)
Converting that to imperial gallons (4.5l) gives a cost of $10.83 a gallon.
In contrast, gas in Canada is about $1.45 a litre so that's $6.52 a gallon.
Or quite a bit less.
But, if one looks at a rough average of MPG for cars/suv's in UK it's not unreasonable to suggest that one might average 45mpg. By contrast in Canada I'd suggest that average might be nearer 30mpg. Cars being having bigger engines, subject to stricter emissions controls and generally being less efficient.
So taking 12000 miles a year as average driving distance, thats an annual cost of $2887 for the UK fuel consumption and $2608 for Canada. Which is only $300 or so different. Or not a lot in the great scheme of things.
Of course, one can argue that Canadians drive greater distances than Brits - although I find I drive considerably less than in the UK as I can only go so far before falling off the edge of the Island - and play around with different vehicles and fuel consumptions to make the difference larger or smaller. You can also argue that car insurance in Canada is massively more expensive in the UK and would eat up any difference in gas cost and then some. Bottom line, for me, is that petrol is bloody expensive wherever you are.

$1.32 in the village. $1.24 on the reserve. Guess where I gassed up?

Gasbuddy.com is your friend if you're travelling. I put in half a tank this morning and it was around $50. The way I look at it, how much do you think it would cost you to make 40 some litres of 87 octane from scratch? No takers? Jings? We have a good deal (my opinion), and the 90 cent dollar, political bs and provincial taxes explain part of the increase. Filling up at the discount station can save $8 or so.

We have 1 native owned station, but they always price match the big guys, so they pass no savings onto the public.
Every station in town is the same exact price 99% of the time, that 1% someone isn't, its always 145.9 everywhere, but someone will put up 145.8. That is about all the savings around these parts.
Makes me wish I was on the border still in Abbotsford, I'd go across and get gas, the city there is right on the border, go early or late in the day, and you can get across, get gas, and be back across in under 15 minutes.
At current prices and adjusting for the exchange rate, would save me about 20 dollars a tank, so 40-80 a month, not huge, but not small either for me.
