2010 and running a pi** up in a brewery

I noticed on the National last night there was some quite good coverage on the olympics from Calgary and Vancouver. There was a little feature though that referred to "Wayne Gretzky the most famous Canadian in the world" doing something as part of the build up - is this what Canadians really believe? Most famous Canadian - maybe Celine Dion maybe even Ben Johnson but Wayne Gretzky?

Surely the most famous Canadian is Captain Kirk?

I'd say Chad Kreuger (sp) and the rest of the Nickleback boys may come quite high on the 'very famous' Canadian scale.
I would have to agree about Gretsky though, he does seem to have a pretty wide range of people that know he's a famous Canadian sportsman - EXACTLY whats needed for the Limpbits.

I think Terry Fox's mum should get the job to light the flame.

The original reference was fame rather than popularity. Anyone I know in the UK would most likely cringe when they see or hear Dion - I suspect she would win a most unpopular as well as a most famous Canadian contest in the UK and elsewhere.

Yes ok the european ice hockey nations as well but most of those are small and even there ice hockey is generally a secondary sport nothing like the dominant position ice hockey has in Canada so in a world context its pretty minor projection.
