Default Moving in September

Hi

We are moving to KL in September and really need advice. We have two children a 6 month old and little boy who will be 3. My husband work will be located in Bangsor?? Can anyone recommend if this is a good place to live with children, or is it very expensive there? Are there any other surrounding areas nice to live thats not to far to commute to Bangsor? What would we expect to pay for a 3 / 4 bedroom apartment / villa/ town house etc

Also my 3 year old will need a pre school, is there many schools near by for his age, even if its just three mornings a week... If anyone could help, I would really appreciate it.

Look forward to hearing from you

many thanks
Nadine

There'll be others around shortly to offer advice.
But I can't understand how on earth anyone would accept a job and move, even say within the UK let alone to a foreign country, without checking up on these essential points before committing.

Err I disagree. If I were younger and living in UK hellhole and offered chance to come out to SE Asia, i'd be out like a shot. Europe is going down the tube but so many folks don't see it....

Anyhow... sure ajw will be around soon with her usual brilliant posts. In meantime suggest looking through this subforum. Lots of posts on Bangsar on here, and lots of folks doing what you're doing. All the best to you and have fun in KL

I know where you are coming from bb and that's why you are so good at admin on here.
But life isn't a bowl of roses and with young children I/we would have done some investigation.
Even if the OP has lots of experience overseas one month before a move is leaving it very late to try to establish the answers to what are very basic and important questions.
I'm in UK myself at the moment for another month ish and it really isn't a hell hole as I suspect you know.
Certainly some areas of Malaysia are worse, imo.

Luckily posters on here will be only to happy to give what is usually great advice.

The point about any overseas posting is not to take anything on trust.
That way lies disappointment.

thanks for your advice.....slight sarcasm!! i was merely after some help! FYI i have researched living in KL and sounds great, I was simply after advice on locations to live etc. We have friends there too, who will give us advice but have found in the past that forums can also give good advice too.. We have also lived in oman, dubai and currently in shanghai, so well aware of expat living.

thank you too the other responses who were nice.

I dont think I will bother with this forum again!!

Nadine - don't be put off - this is a great forum and people are very helpful. To be fair to ex reg your original post probably did give the impression that you were about to up sticks with only a month to go without much preparation (sounds a bit like what I did actually!!)

ex reg - some of us didn't have the luxury of doing much research before we moved. My hubby was unemployed for 4 months before we moved to Singapore so we did accept and move rather quickly and with not much research. As he was coming on a one year contract initially we had to pay all our own moving costs, flights etc but we still thought it was worth it - partly for the experience and partly because the alternative was staying at home with no job.

I can't deny that I also had my head firmly stuck in the sand about our move as I was really struggling with the idea of moving away from our family. My children were just slightly older than Nadine's so schooling wasn't a major issue - we had plenty of time to suss things out once we arrived.

Many many people arrive in Singapore (and I'm sure lots of other countries) - and stay in temporary accommodation to begin with while they explore what's available and where might be most suitable.

Thanks Bocat, you have made me feel better. Of course I would not move to a Country without doing any research. My children come first, and would never move them unless I knew they would be safe and happy. And like you said they are still young, so school is important but not that important until next year. I guess I could have worded my first post better. Also we wont be moving to probably October now and when we do move we would stay in serviced apartments until we found comfortable and practical to live.

Hope your having fun in Singapore. Or are you now in KL?
thanks again : )

We've just moved to Johor Nadine. Just across the border from Singapore - after almost 4 years there.

Hope you enjoy KL when you get there. There are quite a few people on here who are already living there so I'm sure you can get lots of good advice.

Hi Nadine

Welcome to BE! We're generally a friendly bunch so please dont be put off :-)

I moved to KL two years ago and my two children were almost exactly the same ages as your two are now.

Bangsar is a great place to live and work. Its one of the more expensive parts of KL, but its relative to your budget. What do you expect to be able to spend? In any case, check iproperty.com.my for property rental listings. Bangsar is very popular with the expat community here and has an abundance of supermarkets, shops, bars and restaurants. There are many good pre-schools for the 3 year old. Most preschools will give you a fee based on a five morning week, you would have to pay for the five days whether you use them or not. Look at Childrens House and Childrens Discovery House.

There are a few who might offer 3 days a week like Taska Suria. Looking further afield in Damansara Heights (a nice, family oriented suburb which neighbours Bangsar) may give you more options.

In terms of property prices it really does vary considerably. You can get a nice 3-4 bedroom apartment in a new upmarket condo development for 8000rm plus in Bangsar. Houses will cost more; those with pools in the same area probably start at 10000rm (dont expect newly renovated at this price). Less expensive neighbouring areas include Seputeh and Bangsar South. There are fewer local amenities in these areas and in the case of Bangsar South it is much more 'local' (which may or may not be your thing!)

I hope this has helped a little; dont hesitate to ask if you have any further questions.

Cheers
Ajw

I'm glad we're a friendly bunch. There's a certain discussion forum in Singapore - which I won't name as it'll probably be deleted anyway - but I swear people just go on there to vent their own anger on other people.

A simple question will be met with sarcasm and just downright rudeness. Needless to say it's not one I ever look at (and I only did a couple of times when I arrived - enough to put you off Singapore for life!)
