I just wanted to check what the electricity supply is in malaysia? I have read that its the same as the UK and the plugs are all three pronged.
The OH and I have been expating it in the States for a number of years and all our electrical stuff is of course US voltage and two pronged plugs.
This might be a daft question to put on a British expat site but has anyone got experience of buying / using transformers?
Are they readily available? Safe to use?
Replacing all our electrical stuff could prove expensive so its something I am trying to avoid.
Thanks all in advance.

Adnams,
What you have read is correct. Same voltage as UK 230/240 volts and standard 3 pin plugs. If your electrical appliance uses 110/120 volts, you need to use a transformer/converter to step down the 230/240 volts Malaysian voltage to your 110/120 volt appliances. Failing to do so will damage your electrical appliances.
You can check this out here: http://www.malaysia-trulyasia.com/to...ity_supply.htm
This shows you which adapters you would use. If you have a 2-pin plug, I have found that using a UK razor adapter works well. I have seen instances where a 2 pin plug has been inerted into a 3 pin socket using a screwdriver to push down the shutter when inserting. Not to be recommended as it can be dangerous, but it seems to work!

It's the same power sockets as the UK. I've just shouted out to Mr bakedbean about the power supply and he says it's more-or-less
the same as UK.

Thank you. Excellent links. Erm, yep, I think we'll skip the screwdriver option for now.

Finding a transformer in JB was not easy, but I did find one here:
