You will be able to buy a SIM card but you'll get a new number.

PS
I think this is correct but i haven't used a mobile since 1992.

Yes, as long as it has been unlocked.

yup should be ok. if you want to use the phone numbers stored on phone, make sure numbers are stored on the phone and not the sim card

A bit late, but... I went to Low Yat shopping mall by Bukit Bintang station (renowned for electronics at cheap prices) and trawled round all the stalls and shops in there (Floor 2 I think) that had signs up saying "Unlocking", asking who could give me the best deal.

Several said they couldn't unlock my particular phone (HTC and not a new model), some made calls to their mates, one guy said 200RM and 4 hours! I know someone who got an iphone unlocked for 70RM on the spot, so I kept on saying no until finally someone was prepared to give me a price I thought was the best I'd get!

Still don't really know the "proper" price for this as I've never done it before and don't really understand what's involved, but at least it worked!

N.B. I lost all my apps so had to re-load them all with the new SIM... Now I'm not sure what will happen when I return to the UK and use my old UK SIM again... I might have the same problem in reverse...?! Anyone know the answer to that one, please share!

Dunno about here but if anyone coming out here then you can buy unlocked Quadband phones in UK from Carphone warehouse. Not too expensive but I don't know the cost.
The phones will accept and work with any sim card bought out here.

I think once its unlocked then it remains that way. It would have only been locked to the original carrier..
