I'm sure some of you green fingered types can tell me the name of this tree??
Its in our local park and i pinched some seeds and a fruit from it on Saturday to try and grow myself.
Its quite large, has redish / yellow coloured fruit like seed pods and the seeds are bright redish / magenta inside.
I think in the summer it has large white flowers.
Any ideas?

Go for it and be sure to post updates on how they are getting on........say every 3 years or so

What is wrong with getting a tree from the garden centre? They have many different types here.
We have a Magnolia tree that is about 30 years old. The roots are damaging the drive that becomes bumpy, the leaves pollute incredibly and only for a few white lotos like flowers.
Regarding growing it from seed, I have been growing a Jacaranda tree for 3 years now. I started with 4 plants, now only one is left and it finds it too cold here. I bring the pot inside the house in winter.
It seems it will not flower in my lifetime.

Unfortunately, when we bought our house there wasn't one tree to offer any border between our land an the fields around us.
Since we've been here we've planted a couple of apple tree's, plum & peach that we're all bought from garden center and our neighbor has also donated a few saplings that he's grown for us. (Nut, Fig, etc )
But we still have loads of land and borders to cover.
We asked the other day at the Garden Center regarding tree prices and they we're pretty expensive. The cypresses we're €25 for 4ft or €200 for one around 20ft.
They had other decorative tree's that were €250 that looked nice and we're a decent size but with a border that's around 300m around our land - that a lot of trees!!!

It's a shame you're not near me.... we're constantly pulling up acacia, hazelnut and cherry saplings that spring up in the middle of our field.... a friend came and dug some out and planted them in his garden and they've grown on really quickly.... good luck with your magnolia - I just hope what comes up really is what you're expecting!!!

The seeds are free while the Magnolia would probably be about €50 or more for a 2 - 3 year old sapling.

The best value are the apple, apricot, pear tree's at about €9 + for a decent size but not always available.
We never seem to see the Kaki tree's at the market or garden center and would like to have one if those planted soon.
What is a 'Festa Patronale' ??

The market is pretty limited in terms of tree's that are on offer and price are still pretty expensive.
