This has nothing to do with ex-pats... we have do not have the right to vote in General Elections.

you cannot vote, but you can take an interest, since it will affect you in every way.

I try to follow the politics, but get lost who is who. I just read Berlusconi wants to be a minister for economy-God save us.

Ok Isakat here is my understanding:

Left/Centre Left Coalition Bersani and Vendola likely to get 40% (34% and 6% respectively) of the vote (Bersani PD is a reformed communist now social democrat and Vendola is a leftist-ecologist).

Centrist led by Monti likely to get about 13% of the vote on current polls.

Protest movement - Grillo - neck and neck with Monti

Centre Right - Berlusconi et al, polling less than 20% about 17 maybe and if PdL remakes their coalition with Lega Nord mid twenties. A coalition of all right and centre right would get a maximum of 30% (if they are lucky).

So if there are effectively 3 blocks, plus Grillo and some odds and sods, which will work out as:

Centre-left/Left 42%
Right/Centre-right 30%
Centre Monti 13%
Grillo 12%
Assorted loonies and single issue nutters about 3%

Concluson: As things stand Bersani will have a big enough majority in both Chambers unless things change. Therefore, Monti will try and get Bersani to ditch the eco-nutters and join him in a more centrist coalition.

Lots still to run before the elections but that is my take for what it is worth

Yes but that still does not get him to 15 % - without Bersani he has no chance

From what I've seen in the press the asorted loonies are by far the majority

Details from ANSA here: OMG
(ANSA) - Rome, January 7 - Ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi announced Monday that he has reached a deal for his People of Freedom (PdL) party to resume its alliance with the Northern League and said he may be economy minister, not prime minister, if his centre-right bloc wins next month's Italian elections.

In exchange, the PdL is backing League leader Roberto Maroni's bid to become governor of Lombardy, the region around Milan.

Maroni recently told Berlusconi that an alliance would not be possible if the media magnate were to run for a fourth term at the helm of government.

"Habemus papam," Berlusconi told RTL radio using the Latin statement pronounced upon the announcement of a new pope.

"Tonight at 1.30 an agreement was signed between us and the Northern League. "Roberto Maroni will be the candidate in Lombardy and I will be the leader of the moderates (at national level). The premier will be decided if we win". Berlusconi added that a possibility would be for PdL Secretary Angelino Alfano to be premier and he to be economy minister if the centre right overturns the centre left's big lead in the polls and prevails next month. The PdL and the League's long-standing alliance ended after Berlusconi's third government collapsed in November 2011, when Italy's debt crisis forced the 76-year-old to resign from office.

The League were staunch opponents of Premier Mario Monti's emergency technocrat government from the time it took over power.

The PdL, meanwhile, backed it until last month.

Although it has recovered recently, the PdL is polling at under 20%, compared to over 30 for the main centre-left Democratic Party, and had little chance of winning the elections without the support of the League.

and Berlo (aka Mr Toad aka Steptoe) says Monti is so full 'of delusions of grandeur' no dialogue is possible. Pot Kettle....
Remember Spitting Images David Owen with David Steel in his pocket - Berlusconni with a glove puppet Alfano springs to mind...

Berlo also described Monti as an out of touch academic last week!

David and David - your analogy is spot on

Don't think we need to worry too much. Berlusconi is saying 'if we win';
5 years ago he was saying 'when we win'. And 5 years ago I would have voted for him. But like me he's now lost the plot.
ciao for now,
'o nonno
