Default Travel/Medical Insurance to USA..

We are a retired British couple with Italian residency and will be flying to the US, via London Gatwick for a six month period. Has anyone had experience of getting travel/medical insurance for trips outside Italy?
Have previously used a British insurance company but they have a clause saying that their policy only applies to UK residents..

I've always used Columbus Direct for travel insurance. The foreign internet companies in general are a lot better for the medical coverage compared to any Italian company, e.g. Allianz only offered me $300k medical coverage instead of $5m from Columbus.
Obviously you'll have to get a personalised quotation because of the length of travel which will exclude you from the annual policies.

Doesn't the US visa waiver program only allow you 90 days in the USA?
