I went to the station this morning ready for the usual negative shake of the head - in fact thats what I got. But then the lady said - lets give it one more try seeing as you've come all the way here and then she nearly fell off her chair as it accepted the booking! Well I felt like blubbering - like I'd won the lottery or something :) So am now the proud owner of 2 tickets to Paris ! Hurray !

Great news Patty - so glad it's all sorted now and that you get to go home.

Yes great news! I'll do you a deal - I'll truthfully tell you what the flight to New York was like when we eventually do it - if I really didn't think it was that bad :fingerscrossed: how about you think about the plane next year?? If I can do the atlantic and back, you can give it a go to the Uk....;)

Oh golly - is the train from Paris to St Malo a TGV ? I thought it would just a regional like here in Italy ? Does that mean I should book it on the sncf site ?

Ps. I dont know why I'm worried ...daughter arrives tonight and she speaks french so she can help me book it :)

Thanks Lorna and Testa :)

BTW Testa - wasnt it you who said the other day that the higher the plane goes, the less it gets the turbulence - hence if you fly to New York then you should have a nice flight - on the other hand me.......I would have to fly over the English Channel in a piddly little plane that bumps all over the place.. and thats on a non windy day  I think you'll be the winner in this one :D I might just give it a miss - but I promise you I'll think about it ok !

Lol! I wasn't suggesting you do the Channel Isles bit - I'm not that daft!! ;)

Hi,
the TGV I took to Rennes last week split at Rennes and one part went on to St Malo afterwards, but there are also regional trains from Rennes to St Malo.
In any case all trains from Paris to Rennes are TGVs, so you'll need to book seats for that part of the journey, even if you change at Rennes for a slow(er) train.
Don't be put off by the option of printing your tickets out at a "borne" at the railway station. It's your only option, in fact, as it's too late for the SNCF to post you your tickets. Just make sure you've got your reference number (normally six capital letters) together with the same CB that you used to pay for the tickets on-line (just an identity check, you won't be debited twice!).
Good luck!

Thanks dmu - but I read somewhere that if you book with a foreign credit card then you cannot print the tickets at the automatic thing - I think you have to go to the counter and collect them - does that sound right ? Did you use a french card? We tried the sncf site last night but a) the tickets are mega expensive (shockingly) and b) the site had technical problems and wouldnt let us go ahead with the booking - so we'll have to try again today. Will they get more expensive as we get closer ? Its going to cost me MORE to do Paris St Malo than it cost me to do Turin Paris (which is almost double the journey !)
Me thinks Testa is right - I'll just have to go and be hypnotised 'I will fly....I will fly' ;);)

Hi,
don't know about using foreign credit cards, mine is French Visa.
The nearer you get to the departure date, the more expensive the tickets will be... My Paris-Rennes TGV last week was about 45€ (but I've got a reduction with my Carte-Sénior:o) and I booked it a week beforehand when I realised about the strike...
Maybe your best bet is to give up on the internet booking and go to your local train station?

Re: Trains to Paris

I'll give it one more try with internet and then if not I'll have to go down to Turin cos our local station could only do the Paris ticket and no further  I'll let you know how I get on :)

Re: Trains to Paris

I managed to do it  I now have the printouts for the trains from Paris to St Malo & back and when I get to Paris I just have to go to either an automatic machine or the ticket desk. I cant take the credit though - it was daughter who did it with me peering over her shoulder and driving her mad :D
The prices are really high - although on the return for only 2€ more we're going to be in 1st class - now thats a first for me
Thanks everyone for your support.

:rofl::rofl::rofl:
sorry this is just the hysterical laughter that comes from near madness;);)

After all my trouble to get those ruddy tickets GUESS WHAT HAPPENED????
The italian public transport strike cancelled my train to Paris and I didnt know until the evening before .......:curse::curse::curse:
Had to do a sort of Sound of Music escapade over the mountains at 5am to Modane and get a different train to Paris - luckily the french guy at the station was extremely helpful.
Anyway, its lovely and cool here

So where exactly are you now Patty?
In Austria on top of a mountain singing "The Hills Are Alive"

Sorry - shouldn't laugh. I know it must have been a tiring and trying time.

Good job you still have your sense of humour. The Italians would make a saint cry.
