am probably going to the travel agent tomorrow - they are as much in disbelief as me and so I will enquire if there is maybe a coach to Chambery or something like that and then get the train from there. Am a bit worried about mounting costs cos with the Trenitalia option with discount I could get to Paris and back on about 120€ for 2 ! (smart price tickets)
As I then have to go on to St Malo and then boat fares to Guernsey it all mounts up.

As I don't know what makes you scared of flying, I'm also thinking it would probably be cheaper for you to do one of these courses where they try and sort out your fears....then at least you could use Ryan!! I've heard good things about them. I don't like flying either but I am getting better - I was like you for a while and would use any other means of transport possible or not even go, just stay in the UK, then we decided to move here, so I had to get myself sorted out..It's taken some doing and some research as my fear was very specifically turbulence, everyone is different, but once I understood the mechanics better, things improved for me. Not perfect, but better...We are planning a trip to New York in October half-term, something I couldn't have even considered 5 years ago even though I'd been before and love New York, it wouldn't have been enough. Now, I'll go because the end result is worth the a little fear and hopefully that's all it will be.. I'm not belittling your fear, far from it, I'm just saying you aren't on your own and maybe it's time to take the bull by the horns as it were...:):)

Hi, sorry to butt in from the France forum, but the SNCF site gives trains from Milan to Paris via Geneva, Zürich and Lausanne, all taking about 8 1/2 hrs. P.S. And scrolling down, I even found a direct train, having chosen a date in July at random.

If I remember rightly, you did the trip to Guernsey last year, so you'll know the ropes from Paris to the island, otherwise give us a shout on the France forum!
Btw, you must reserve seats in advance for TGVs, no possibility of chancing the trains!
Good luck, whatever!:)

thanks so much dmu - I remember you popped in last year as well to help
me :)

The Milan option sounds possible but a bit long winded. I'll have to go to the agents today and see. I feel kind of like a let-down balloon at the mo - I was getting all excited about going away and now I dont know when I can go !!

Thanks Testa - I know you're right and I should just try and get over this silly fear (which only reared its ugly head about 3 years ago) I know there are alot of people out there that feel the same. My OH gets very cross with me and I in return get really cross with him for not even trying to understand. ANyway - I will try and think about it - I promise :)
And btw - I think you're ever ever so brave to fly to New York - well done you

I have to say that I never had a fear either but as I get older (and fly more) I've noticed that I get a really bad 'feeling' before each flight. I keep a brave face on for the kids but I don't actually enjoy it. Maybe it's cos I have in the back of my head the idea that the more you fly the more chance you've got of having an accident. I've also noticed that my body and brain are less 'flexible' than they used to be. When we were in Gardaland at the weekend I got myself in a right tizzy going on the damn Tronky thingy! I know it's safe, but I'm scared of hurting myself and just can't seem to do all the things I used to. I used to go on everything with total relish but I was quite happy to have Julia with me and therefore the excuse to sit out of things with her or go on the teacups with her which I still CAN manage! :)

I dont even like the teacups Indie :) I think its as you say - as we get older it seems we get more worked up about stuff. I've become such a pessimist and I honestly was not like that when I was younger. Maybe its the added responsibility of children and family - makes us feel more vulnerable ??
I take a step back and look at myself and I dont like what I see - but I just cant seem to mentally overcome it. I know I'm a sissy - I know I'm being unreasonable (when OH wants to drive up that mountain and I refuse ) but its so much stronger than me.

You went to Gardaland - if only you'd waited until this weekend I could have met you there .... and joined you on the teacups.

I must admit that it wasn't really planned. We realised about a week before that it was San Giovanni day last thurs and therefore Torino shuts down and OH found himself with two days off work and so we booked everything on the Monday for leaving on the Thursday... I think it's cos I complained that he's only taken one week off in the Summer (and under sufferance) to go back to UK and we will be back here on the 23rd of August so he was trying to stop me going on. ;) As grown-ups we rather fancied a nice walk along the Cinque Terre but the kids had other ideas. We will have to plan something at some point together Lorna though (although I've said a similar thing to Testa too!!)

Re: Trains to Paris

HELP !! I just got a call from my local station and she told me that the ticket sales have opened but the 8am train to Paris is not on and the only one is from Turin at about 5pm arriving in Paris about 11.30 at night.

Now - do you think its safe in Paris at night - cos I know for a fact I would not like to be around Porta Nuova station in Torino at night. What do you think ? Taking into consideration its only me and 12 yr old ? Should I go for it or wait as the lady suggests and see if the 8am comes up in the next few days or is that a bit risky and maybe I should grab my tickets now ?

Flying isn't my fav past time. I used to enjoy the over night Turin to Paris journey, but they did away with it when the Lyon - Paris part became high speed. I know how Patty feels though 'cos I do not like hights - big time. Hubby will go on all the rides at Gardaland or else where, but not the cups. No way.

An advert for tgveurope.com just popped up on my screen advertising Turin-Paris from 30 euros. Might be worth checking out...

Oh sorry just saw your post about Turin-Paris! I used to live in Paris and whether or not it's safe to hang around there at night really depends on the area. When I was travelling to the UK there were some girls planning on spending the night at the Gare du Nord, which I definitely wouldn't recommend...
