Nope never had one of those... Is it because I am married to Mrs Sensible and therefore a dependant as in a child, a wayward and rebellious child maybe. Sounds about right.

Thanks to all, this thread is super-helpful .

My impression is that depending on what comune, city or town or even the person that attends you you'll have quite different luck with the requirements needed.

So it seems that I'll skip having the certificato di residenza (I'll have to pay more for the electricity bill but it doesn't seem very much). It is not needed for opening a bank account right?

Like many things in Italy it will depend on the Bank, the teller and the mood the teller is in or whether you know his cousin (sorry a bit cynical)!

I think you will probably find you will need the cdr to open a bank account and it may also come in handy when dealing with other elements of "la burocrazia"; therefore, probably worth getting imho for what it is worth...

Getting residence takes a long time. According to someone I was talking to yesterday he couldn't get residence in Milan even after 11 months despite working there. You really need to show you are working in Italy orliving off a retirement pension to get residence here and a bank account extract will certainly not be enough. If you are living off rental income from outside Italy I would consider very carefully before becoming a resident as you will have to declare your property to the italian tax authorities and pay a yearly tax on its capital value plus tax on your rental income (after deducting any taxes you pay whereever the property is). I recommend remaining a non-resident if poss
If I own a house worht 300k in the UK then how much do I have to pay in terms of tax. I don't think there will be any rental income as mortgage and other solicitor fee would almost make it zero.

It's true that it's worth getting residency just to get a bank account as the cost of a non-resident account are very high. I paid over 100€ with san paolo for about 6 months. Here in SR I was refused residency for about 6 months even after transferring the requisite sum of €5000 into the above San Paolo account. The problem seemed to be that in Sicily they are worried about who is going to pay for your health care. When I finally got an IT VAT account number I was given my residency after then policeman's visit (he just rings the bell and makes sure you are there). Residency may be useful for buying a car here too?? As for the tax on a house (BTW this tax is called the IVIE or "ivie") at the moment it does not seem to be much of a problem for UK house owners as you can apparently declare the valuation on your council tax band as the capital value and deduct council tax from the 0.76 % tax. However, I have not seen any official document that states that you are allowed to do this and there seem to be a lot of unknowns - for instance if you have tenants they will be paying the council tax so I don't see how you can deduct this from your Italian tax. I would be interested to know a bit more about this myself!

hmm, I seem to remember reading in the paper -Sole24Ore I think- that council tax is not deductable because it is a service tax where as IVIE is a patrimonial tax.

At the moment you cannot deduct your council tax payments from IVIE. It is calculated on your council tax band. I cant agree with nick tonight - it is not worth getting residency to save a euros on a bank account. The bureaucracy and time wasted more than eliminates any monetary saving. AS a non resident you will pay marginally more for your electricity. You will pay non resident banking charges and you will not get the 200 euro discount on your IMU. You will get a discount on your TARSU. Only take residence if you are legally required to do so by staying in Italy more than 183 days a year.

Thanks modicasa for the information about council tax - too late unfortunately for my commercialista who didn't know this. I also take back what I rashly said about becoming a resident to reduce bank charges!
