Sad that so many of you dislike Naples. I love the place - it is so alive and the locals are incredibly friendly. It is probably my favourite city in Italy.
If you are visiting Pompeii for the first time I would strongly recommend joining a guided tour for the best experience.

But tbf I don't like cities and/or crowded places in general. So it would have to be pretty special for me to like a city. And I don't like things that aren't well organised/maintained. Do fur example I quite like Copenhagen...but I suspect it might get a bit boring living in Denmark (it's a very mild country...mild weather...mild geography...mild mannered people).
So it's not surprising that I don't like Naples. I had a sense of disappointment...you have all this pride and passion thst Neapolitans say they have for their city ...and yet their most famous monuments are covered in graffiti and their most famous sites (like Certosa ...that place on the hillside that you reach via the funicular) should be stunning but they are so neglected (it's not just me who thinjs that, read the comments on TripAdvisor). Yes, I know that poverty is an issue but I think maintenance is a type of love, and despite all they say I didn't see much evidence of Neapolitans demonstrating that type of love (that's "sad"). I don't get it
I thought it was the epitome of Italian chaos and lack of care...then I went to Palermo...which is worse.

If it had a good clean up it would be the best city in Europe. As C.2s says the place is very neglected. A beautifull bay with Capri and Ischia and Vesuvius in the background.
When I used to travel on the train into the town you could see the wrecked sewage treatment works pouring effluent untreated into the sea. I suspect the level of corruption will prevent much improvement.

We stayed in Hotel del Sole, Via Plinio15. Pompei.
Comfortable hotel, well located.
With free car parking and a restaurant on site.
The price was excellent too- we stayed in September last.
It was great to be beside the site, without the added hassle and exhaustion of a train journey to and from Pompei each day. Good luck.
