Hi we visited Pompeii and Herculaneum ( the latter is definitely also worth a visit) Pompeii is a good whole day if you want to see everything. We stayed at a hotel called Hotel Caravel in St Agnello near the train station for an easy journey to visit Pompeii and
a nice but quieter area than Sorrento which is also an easy visit, the hotel has a pool which was fab after a day of sightseeing. Good luck

Pompeii is easy to reach from Naples, we took a local train from Napoli Garibaldi station to Pompeii Scavi-Villa Dei Misteri station. It was a deliberate choice because we love taking local trains and seeing a bit more than the touristy parts of cities. The train takes just over half an hour and you can walk to the Pompeii excavation in under five minutes.

It's a wonderful place to explore, and of course a bit eerie, you can't help but feel the horror of what its inhabitants faced.

.
I'm not a big fan of Naples but there is an advantage to staying there if you have 3 days to visit Pompeii because after a day/two days at the excavations you can visit the museum of archaeology in Naples where the vast majority of the artefacts (from Pompeii and Herculaneum) are on display. It's a typical Italian museum...chock full of stunning stuff but sadly slightly neglected. Yet it helps you really understand everyday life in Pompeii and Herculaneum (not just the dramatic tragic death bit of the story) .

I would have thought it would take more than 1 day, especially if you take into account the heat (depending what time of year it is). Pompeii is right up there with the most memorable sights on the planet IMO.

Staying in Naples itself would be the obvious answer, because as others have said you can see the Archeological museum and a host of other fascinating sites and monuments. Naples has changed hugely in the last few years and is much more accommodating for tourists than before. Having said that the Circumvesuviana train service between Naples and Pompei is a disgrace and if you take it watch out for pickpockets etc.

I was very disappointed with that. You can just take a normal train to Pompei.

We had been to Naples before and did not want to stay in Naples (not our cup of tea) hence where we actually stayed, we visited Capri and drove along the coastline and Sorrento was lovely to visit, our main reason for our visit though was to see pompeii and Herculaneum as I am a Roman fanatic lol I blame my classics classes at high school.

The train from St Agnello was good, clean, on time and had the most perfect bar outside the train station in St Agnello perfect after a days sightseeing on a hot summers day but..Naples was a very different story.

I could have stayed much longer but we had other places to visit….it was for a special birthday (mine) but I like others to “have their say” they did so we also explored other places. We visited in July and we had a heatwave lol we were in Pisa for another special birthday (mine) in 2023 and yet another heatwave lol we nearly all melted especially when we visited Florence we had never experienced heat like that.

We were in Pompeii in Sept a few years ago. There was no way I could spend all day in that heat. 🥵

Many thanks for all of the comments.

We are going to be there in very late June, Our primary objectives are firstly enjoy it, secondly see Pompeii , Anything else will be great, it sounds like getting around will not be a problem. Focus now is where to base ourselves.
Thanks again for all the comments,

PSG

An excellent watch and the large villa with its own gym/spa, it must of been fabulous in its day and not much difference to how a lot of the wealthy live today lol
