Easy, at the Agenzia delle entrate, it's the rest that's difficult.

Re: Partita IVA
How do you pay tax at the moment? In the UK? Or do you earn under €5000? I know it's not what you want to hear but you need a commercialista ! You can open the partita IVA quite easily without one but then you'll be lost when it comes to tax returns unless you're a whizz at these things.

Ok, I'm Italian. Opening a partita IVA it's a matter of minutes, just go to the Agenzia delle Entrate, choose the code corresponding to your job from the list they will give you (in Italian) and they will assign your VAT registration number immediately. Opening a partita IVA if free of charge in Italy. What happens then...it's a different story. You will actually need an italian commercialista to keep your IVA books in the proper way and to prepare your payoffs (every three months usually), this will cost you from 300 up to 800 euros a year (if they ask you more...just go to another commercialista). If your income is less than 30.000 euros per year you could opt for a simplified taxation. Your payoff will be calculated as a difference between the sum of your invoices and the sum of your expenses (roughly), usually you can deduct a lot of expenses (equipment, petrol, assurance, office lease and so on). Keep in mind that, depending on your job, your invoices could be VAT-exempt if your client is resident in another EU country (including UK).
Sorry I could not help you more, I'm an architect not a commercialista...

I have forgotten to say that, when you go to the Agenzia delle Entrate, they will give you a form to be compiled; since the form is in italian, I enclose here a link where you can download it in advance so to have time to understand what kind of information they require from you; this is the link: http://www1.agenziaentrate.it/moduli...i_attivita.htm
Download the first "modello" to get the form and "istruzioni per la compilazione" to have some information on how to compile it.
This is the form for self-employed people (lavoratori autonomi) and sole traders (ditta individuale), if your case is different they will give you a different form (probably very similar to this, anyway). In the form you they will require some information that may seem odd, don't panic; in Italy we like to write simple things in a cryptic way. For example tick the box "Contribuenti minimi, etc, etc" if you presume to don't have a revenue over 30.000€ in the next year; here you can find more info about that http://www.dottorecommercialista.eu/...ti-minimi.html (in Italian, sorry). Again you will be required to choose the correct code corresponding to your business "codice attività", you can find it by going here http://www.istat.it/strumenti/defini...to&invia=Cerca and typing your business (i.e. "architetto" or "fotografo" or whatever else) here is the complete list http://www.istat.it/strumenti/defini.../STRUTTURA.zip. in the "modello" probably you have to compile the sections: A,B,C,D,F (who holds your IVA books and at what address: may be either you or your commercialista) and G; E is only related to business changes. If you have problems, compile it with the help of an Italian friend who has a partita IVA (a professional, a shop owner, virtually anyone who is self employed or own a business).Don't worry, all teh process it's much easier than what it seems.
