Yeah you would have thought there would be a catch, but I'm going to give it a go and see what happens.:fingerscrossed: I would love to get rid of sky, will keep you informed.

no catch, but it is in beta testing, and I'm certain that when they do really go live they will charge, unless people like the BBC get them closed down first. Before all that just download, watch and enjoy.

Please do, the thought of such a valuable freebee is tempting and, in common with Oscar Wilde,I can resist anything except temptation.

The catch is that you don't get anything for free. There will be a subscription or fee for downloading. Plus they will put a block on access outside of the UK for certain programs. But it's good while it lasts!

Re: Free UK TV

We've got a Mac, so our catch is that it doesn't work

duffer May 26th 2009 1:39 am

Re: Free UK TV

That's not a catch. I've got a Mac but use VM Fusion.

chris120 May 26th 2009 2:53 am

Re: Free UK TV

there was no obvious fee when i tried it, how will they collect the fee do you think?

duffer May 26th 2009 3:39 am

Re: Free UK TV

At the moment it's a beta version so that's probably why no fee. The fees will be for downloadable HD movies or for streaming HD movies. I'm sure it would be similar to iTunes in that you pay for what you watch whilst at the same time there will be a lot of free TV. Again, I cannot think they will allow certain programs to be viewed outside of the UK.

Re: Free UK TV

Further to my earlier post. Here is something interesting -
http://ec.europa.eu/avpolicy/reg/avms/index_en.htm
An EU directive for television without frontiers. Could mean from 2010 we could all have normal access (as opposed to access via a proxy server) to the BBC iPlayer, 4oD type media players from anywhere in Europe...

Thanks Debra it works down here in Salento. Also thanks to Duffer for the information. Great to see some live TV, beats all those repeats on BBC Prime.

Couldn't see anything last night on my home PC, it gave the message 'Scrambled' (like eggs?) but seems to be going ok on my office PC this morning.

Is that something to do with my provider being different? Experts? :(

Re: Free UK TV

It might be something to do with protections against some sites ..... but that could be rubbish.
I got scrambled on the first channel I tried. Tried the others and they all worked and then so did the first one too.

There is a lot more talk on this on the original thread in "The Lounge" where there are more computer experts on line.

Yes! as i said it works fine on my office computer (daytime) but all scrambled on home PC (evenings) but I don't know if it's a question of connection or computer or something else. Have to take a day off to find out ;)

I watched it on Italian Sky Sports, so ner to you! BTW, meant to tell you - if the feed is from UK Sky for a match then you get the commentary. Last night was from here so either nothing or Italian.

I was on the plane with a bunch of happy Barca supporters flying into Rome last night - I guess they stayed that way!! :p The airport and station in Rome had made an effort display wise for the match. Some of the displays were very cool!

Thanks to all. Yesterday I watched Emmerdale and Coronation Street and even the ads on ITV.Today I,m having problems. It hasn't been blocked out already has it? Just as I've discovered a new world.

TestaRossa May 30th 2009 4:05 am

Re: Free UK TV

Hints and tips: If you are already doing all these things then I can't help! Here goes:

Don't have any other internet reliant programmes running in the background - I only keep my virus protection on and that cuts into the programmes, not surprisingly, when it is downloading an update.

If you are getting streaming in one location and not another - check speed. I have the highest Telecomm offers and it still cuts out - my average speed is nearly 5.5mg so not bad.

If it goes to scramble, don't panic - it will be that your connection has dropped or your speed is low. Always use the lo speed options for the channels. This seems to help.

Expect it to drop during live programmes - guess the feed is more sensitive - but I've noticed in BGT for example, the ads never drop but the show does. So this will effect sports watched live too.

When a programme drops go the next channel up or down and start to load it, then go immediately back to the channel you want, this should sort it!

If all this fails, I'm guessing your speed will be the big decider in whether this service is for you or not. One way to check is to see if Alice are offering their TV service in your area, if they aren't you will almost certainly have problems with FilmOn.:)

Thanks for all these tips.It came back and I'm overdosing on ITV. I watched the Coronation Street omnibus this morning but now it has just cut off.We are in the middle of a thunderstorm at the moment and as I'm just so ignorant about pcs then I suppose this might have something to do with it.Tomorrow I'm getting the Sunday Times which has a suplement with the weeks programmes and I'll be able to plan things instead of jumping about.Oh, I do hope this is here to stay.

Neighbours is on Five at 5.30/6.30 every week day!! I haven't seen it since I moved here. I am such a sad sack I know!! Beats all the others for me :D!

With this, YouTube and Corny.org I rarely watch Sky now - Corny is up with the US schedules so miles ahead on all the series that are on Sky now. But I don't know if I could get rid of Sky - might cause ructions with the rest of the family!!

Thanks Ariel will give this one a try. The other one works fine during the day, but can not get it working at all in the evening:confused:

I've never had any luck with Nova. Plus isn't it downloads of archive rather than streaming of live? I don't have the room on my laptop to keep loads of large files unfortunately.

So how does Nova work?? I can see they have hourly schedules. Do you have to try to download it at the selected hour? Does it come down straight away. I remember a few years ago I used Bit torrent for films and if there were not enough people on it you could wait hours........days to get the film.

TestaRossa Jun 2nd 2009 5:06 am

Re: Free UK TV

I think that's how Nova works - it is bit torrents. I've found too many other ways to watch the TV I want to bother with it now!! Have heard of a few other sites but I only stick with Corny and this new one, plus YouTube of course!

I've been trying to find British TV for ages!!! I'm not a TV junkie but it just helps to keep you a little bit sane with one foot in Blighty, am I right?

In fact, I think I'm in love with whoever mentioned this site, :D do you reckon the period dramas will be on?

There is youtube but I can't find any programs that are full-length except the apprentice, and I'm not a fan. Did anyone find any others?

TestaRossa Jun 2nd 2009 6:26 am

Re: Free UK TV

Corny has season 3 of the tudors on now. You can view from episode one through to wherever it is currently up to in a marathon sitting. FilmOn is live UK tv for the main 5 channels - so whatever peeps in the UK are watching, that's what is on now. If you look at the thread on Sky in Italy you will see you can get access to the freeview channels but you need the equipment. I'm happy to take my chances with FilmOn and Corny. Sky Italy has Fox which keeps me happy but I think I am going to ditch the films and sport.

If you would watch the period drama's again and again I would check out buying the various series on HMV, Amazon, Play.com and CDwow. You can find some real bargains for back seasons of various dramas. Also if you have a) a british issued credit card with a british address and b) sufficient space on your hard drive or a back up to put it on, i-tunes can also be good value for tv and films. HTH:)
