Hi Johnny,
As a British citizen you have the right to live in Italy and will automatically be entitled to permisso di sigiourno (permision to stay). You will need this document to obtain your codice fiscale which is your tax code number and this is required for opening a bank account and many of the basics of living in Italy.
If you want to buy a car in Italy you will need to take Italian residence.
Depending on the type of pension you will be drawing from it may be beneficial to consider a QROPS (Qualifying recognized overseas pension scheme).
If you would like further advice on this, I will be happy to point you in the right direction.

An EU citizen does NOT need a permesso di soggiorno. It was abolished a few years ago.
An EU citizen can stay here up to 3 months and if that person intends to stay longer then within that time period they are obliged to go the Comune and ask for residency. They will be asked to provide proof of income among other things before being granted residency but the permesso di soggiorno does not exist anymore.
People are very grateful on here for advice but giving out the wrong advice is misleading and could cause some folks to search fruitlessly in the many Italian offices for papers that they do not need.

I think I ought to write out a paragraph about laws and legislation and then whenever this ugly argument raises its head I can just copy and paste instead of repeating myself !
By the way ......... thought you did need residence to legally purchase a car.

Mmmm - back to the old 'depends on where you live' I suppose
. To be perfectly honest, I have never got to the bottom of it Legally, but I do know folks who have done it without residency (Illegally
)

'Don't mention permesso di soggiorno' should be added to the site rules to save Lorna's sanity.

Lorna - the PdiS does still exist though - you just don't need it if you are an EU citizen. Americans, Ozzies etc. all need to go through the PdiS hoops that we all used to have to go through. Thought I should mention it as I know occasionally we get aliens from other countries visiting the forum. Just don't shout at me...........

Wouldn't shout at you Red.
Yes of course I know that the new regulations are only for EU citizens and not other nationalities.
That's why I haven't pulled my hair out over the other thread about bringing a Brazilian wife to Italy as I know it is all different in that case.
The poster Paul.Redmond in this thread though was addressing Johnny as a British citizen and we all know by now that what he said is just wrong.

Hi Lorna,
Appologies for any confusion. Becuase I needed to bring my wife here, I had to go through all the hoops although I was told by Banca di Roma that they would not open a bank account for me without PDSG. Hopefully now things are more simple
