Bacon
Hello
I have just got back from the uk and I had http://www.davide.co.uk/breakfast.jpg And would like to know Can we buy Bacon in Italy or does anyone know how to make it or what to ask the butcher... Thanks |
Re: Bacon
Looks a little more up market than tesco's !
The nearest I've found is thin sliced pancetta at Iper. good luck |
Re: Bacon
I get bacon at Lidl and now I can also get Tulip Bacon at Penny Market (which is sometimes called Billa) :)
|
Re: Bacon
euro spin has bacon and its called bacon on the pack
. its full of flavore and not to fat and not dear the best we have had in italy . Infact it tastes like english bacon used to |
Re: Bacon
The only one I've been able to find is in a SISA supermarket, it is by Citterio and is called bacon.
Very thinly sliced, quite fatty, but acceptable since it's the only one I can find. Not a lot of big chain supermarkets our way. Oh, and I had that sort of breakfast in Spain recently. ciao for now, 'o nonno |
Re: Bacon
It's twenty to one in the morning and I'm now hungry after seeing this!
|
Re: Bacon
My mouth is watering. I'm swear there is a smell coming from the pic and I don't even like fry ups.:D I don't know where you can get bacon. I sometimes buy a bacon joint in Bolzano or the Polish section of the supermarket and Ikea at Xmas.
|
Re: Bacon
I always get the bacon from Lidl. It's called Bacon but sometimes its called Pancetta but it's the exact same thing, probably a supply problem. It's thin and gets crispy, it's not fatty.
Any leftovers from the English breakfast get put into a bacon, brie and chutney baguette the day after. :) |
Re: Bacon
How could you possibly have leftovers?
|
Re: Bacon
Simply... delish

Re: Bacon
Now the bacon is sorted....what about making hash browns..best way of making them
|
Re: Bacon
It's not the bacon that bothers me... I can live with the pancatta. It's the baked beans :( A local supermarket was selling them for around .30 cents but the stock ran out and not replaced, our 'local' Lidl is about 25 miles away and I refuse to pay 2 euros for Heinz at Achan
|
Re: Bacon
I followed the post re 'Bacon' from Eurospin and got some - €1.79 for 200 grams and the equivalent of streaky bacon in the UK. It's not the rashers we all perhaps yearn for but ok in a buttie!
|
Re: Bacon
this thread is so funny to me..there is nothing on that plate I will be missing at all!!

but considering that I would rarely as in actaully never eat that sort of thing here Im not sure I will be thinking of it at all.. However when we moved from Aus to UK..I never thought about tim tams until my mum brought some on a visit..would never eat such an unhealthy thing at home ..but umm..well have to hide them now so as to not eat them all in one go  |

speaking of LIDL, my nearest has renovated and now has an all day oven cooking all sorts of pastries and breads until up to 20.00 its fantastic, and dead cheap too, like having a mini tescos bakery over here (i know its sacreligious what with all the amazing pastry out here but sometimes when i'm coming back late from work I need that sort of stuff) |

Re: Bacon
A certain moderator currently has a large stock of English bacon in her freezer - think she'd slay anyone who gets near it though!!

Isakat, Padova... just off the Ovest exit from A4 :D |
Re: Bacon
Our larger Lidl also has a bakery. Not keen on pre-baked, finished in store bread though.

Re: Bacon
Things have really changed from when I arrived about 15 years ago, at Esselunga you seem to be able to get most things - bacon, prepacked and called "bacon" , baked beans, Colman's mustard, McVities choc digestives. Maybe it's just Esselunga, but for me there's no longer the challenge of trying to get the nearest Italian match. Good in some ways, but not as much fun!!:(

Re: Bacon
hi Twinkle Canelli, I'm in Como and Esselunga is really big in Lombardy so basically I'm spolit for choice. How about trying Asti or Alessandria? I bet they might have an Esselunga as they have a strong presence in the North. Good luck!!:)
|
Re: Bacon
Twinkle - you can get baked beans in any LIDL. They're good and only about 50 cents a tin. You can get Milk chocolate digestives in SMA (Auchan) or Coop or Crai.
Theres an Essalunga here just outside Turin near Orbassano and you can even get that lovely Tiptrees Jam in there  |

What I am really struggling to find right now is dark, soft brown sugar for baking..... they used to do it but have suddenly stopped and I can't find it anywhere! Thanks girls!! |
Re: Bacon
Stop at Esselunga - seriously. I've just gone into my kitchen and they sell soft brown sugar in a 500g bag by St Louis(?!??!! - that famous brand!)

Re: Bacon
Twinkle - if you visit Essalunga - you should find a Carrefour not far away in Nichelino - its a big one too.
I know what you mean about the beans - however if you ever go down to Turin then alot of the chinese/asian shops sell Heinz beans and I only paid 1 euro a tin (compared to about 2.50 in Carrefour) I found allsorts of lovely things in the chinese shop - Birds Custard, Pot Noodles, Salad Cream, Custard creams and ginger bics ! |
Re: Bacon
the beans in LIDL are perfect , I never thought heinz were that great anyway , I always bought cross and blackwell , but its up to the individual , I like HP Sauce some prefer daddies, the only thing that I have bought in LIDL that was no good was the American pan cake mix which was vile
|
Re: Bacon
I can agree with the pancake mix, I have recently been buying their Pancetta, and although obviously nothing like our own thick cut rashers, it still fries okay and its the right size :D
I polished off a bag of their sweet chilli nacho's this week which was lovely and i'm sitting looking at a tin of chilli which I will do this week, Lidl's is definately providing me with my home foreign comforts lol |
Re: Bacon
I have to say, our LIDL's up here in Padova too are frequented by either the north or west African communities, with a large proprtion of eastern european and me :D it must be a class thing, maybe LIDL is seen as below the large proportion of middle class Italian's here in Padova :D
|
Re: Bacon
Apparently the deleted people have been following women home in Vicenza , I am told they are a bit creepy, my girlfriend had her bag taken in the same shop before it was LIDL
|
Re: Bacon
I saw packs of bacon in our new Eurospin yesterday and it looked rather tempting . Oh was relucatnt to visti but then spent ages looking at the amazing range of cheap spirits and wines . ...
|
Re: Bacon
Yeah, Eurospin is my kind of shop too. Love the feta cheese, Calamatta olives, Greek yoghurt( from Greece), smoked pancetta, choccy puddings for the kids, etc. Good selection of breads and sometimes cheap toys. Got a skateboard for DS for under a tenner a few days ago.
Even the stupid cat prefers the cat food from there to real chicken and meat. |
