Just to point out that WA has removed brickies from their state sponsorship list and I know plenty of brickies, most of them are self employed and do not sponsor, just hire TAs busy season....

Doesn't matter what the score they give you is, you will still have to get the correct score n the immigration website that OS gave you a link for. I suggest you look at that now, and check just what you need.

60 points is enough for state sponsored visas - but those 20 points for English can only be achieved if you can score all 8's in the IELTS test, and partner skills points are only awarded if your partner has a skill on the CSOL, and has passed skills assessment and English ability.

If you can find a state to sponsor you, you have 5 + Age 25 + Quals 10 + Exp 15 = 55, so you need IELTS scores of 7 and 10 points to pass the points test.

Lots of people do IELTS for all sorts of reasons - I did it for points, others have to do it as part of skills assessment. With 55 points you only need to get 7's and there is help online and at the colleges, etc conducting the tests. There are two types - Academic and General, and as it's just for points it will not matter which you do.

I didn't find it hard, but every one is different. I did the test twice though as went straight from a night shift the first time, and didn't get the score I needed in listening (I needed all 8's for points). The college where I did the test had options including prep classes and practice tests. I also found practice tests for the reading, and sample writing pieces by googling.

The 4 tests are reading, listening, writing and speaking. Both the reading and listening are multiple choice questions. The writing has two written pieces of differing lengths and speaking is fairly general with questions on home, neighbourhood, friends and family sort of questions with one longer question where you are given time to think about an answer first.
