Student Visa - Medicals

Hello all,

I have just applied for my place in college and should find out next week if I get it or not. I have been reading all the posts and everyone seems to be waiting on medicals! is it the same for student visa's? should we front load them? as we need to be in oz mid dec, and course starts feb 08.
Also do you need police checks on a student visa?

thanks

Re: Student Visa - Medicals

No police checks, but you do need the meds. It tells you exactly what to do on the immigration web site under the type of student visa you are going for. It does say you can get your medicals done upto 6 months before getting the visa.

Have you had your medicals done yet? Your course starts Feb 08 too doesnt it? where are you going to? Do you know if our medicals will go to sydney on the bottom of the big pile like all the people waiting on here, because some people are waiting 8 weeks +. I only have about 13 weeks till we want to be out there.
Have had 2 offers on the hourse in the first week it been up! :D

Re: Student Visa - Medicals

No I haven't had mine done yet, I'm too busy panicking about the house falling through as I haven't been given the solicitors details yet. Probably panicking too soon as we were only expecting them from Wednesday onwards, but we already had one sale fall through, and it all rests on that. They have had the survey, so that is good.

My next plan of action is to start sorting the dog out.

If you do a search for student visas it looks like they are issued in about a week in the UK, so that isn't too bad. I haven't actually looked to see where the medicals go yet.

You can only apply for the visa 4 months before the course starts, so I can't see that they would leave people waiting for 8 weeks.

Where abouts are you doing your course? We are hoping, house selling permitting to be over early December to Adeliade.

Good luck

Re: Student Visa - Medicals

Hi guys,

Same position as all of you a think. Still waiting for student visa to come in and have put the house up for sale. Does anyone know if there are any circumstances that the student visa wouldn't be granted? I kinda assume that cause its a temp visa n your giving them a wad of cash, that they pretty much give them out no problem?

Hopefully this is the case as am sure the house will be sold within the next week give or take, but need to do this so that we can get over before the flight prices go up in Dec!!

The student visas go to London and if no problems are processed beteen 5 and 10 days.

If any problems, like us, the doctor didn't tick box A or B, quite a biggie as thats the question about if the x-rays are ok!!!!

Then sent to Sydney and I believe they are running 8 weeks behind!!!!

I heard that if you get the student visa done over in Australia it is done same day!!!!!

Cheers all

we have just had an offer from a college so will pay asap and get coe number.
I too was wondering if they ever refuse student visa and for what reasons. I already have my flights booked for early dec as originally it was booked for a family holiday.
How soon after paying does it take to get student visa roughly

Re: Student Visa - Medicals

Hi all, just reading this thread as we are also going under the student visa option.

My wife's course starts beginning of Feb, so the earliest we can apply is early part of October. I understand you can apply online, and at that stage the meds & xray forms are produced, which we hope to then have the medicals a couple of days later and all documents I believe are posted to the London office, or ideally sent as attachments.

We managed to get a pretty good deal with the medical fees, as the doctor suggested he is prepared to conduct the medicals at our home to reduce the costs, so it's roughly now £410 for 2 adults and 2 children including xrays and postage.

Does anyone know the online checklist for student visa's, as I've been informed you will be advised the requirements after you have lodged your application online, is this correct..

Good luck to you all aswell, we are a brave bunch !!!!!!!!

Hi,

If you go online at

www.immi.gov.au/e_visa/students

all info on student visa's there. we went through an agent, but all very straight forward and am sure we could have done it ourselves and saved a bit of cash!!!

Cheap meds by the way Russ n Sarah we were bout £650 2 adults and 2 kiddiewinks ( 2 and 1 years).

And I can tell you, I feel like heading back to that doctors and asking for some back after her **** up!!!!! LOL

Off to the Gold Coast TAFE Brockies, colin ( hubbie) studying cabinet making. We couldn't get any visa so this was a last resort to getting over, and although a fairly pricey one, a well couldnt handle all the waiting about all other visas seem to be!!!! And in a lot of ways its all ballanced out i.e. we I still owe a fair bit on my student loan this end, and hubbie has never paid any to his!!

Just wanna be there now!!!!!

Cheers all

Hi everyone,

Just a wee update from my agent.

He says that all should be fine, only a major health issue would prevent a student visa being granted.

Cheers

Hey Mandy

Hubby going to TAFE Nambour Sunshine Coast (Brickie) with us too this was our only option in getting over as I am a Certified Accounts Technician training to hopefully become a fully blown accountant soon and he is a self employed black cab taxi driver?? none on the list!!! It is a very costly way to get over but as I said its what you want in life. Do you have any kids?

Cheers guys,

Yeah you gotta weigh it all up n do what you have to do!!!!

Similar situation, Colin self empolyed does general home improvements, we'd have to have waited another 2 years to get TRA n then prob another long wait applying for a visa!!!

I'm a residential worker but don't have a degree so it was well complicated that way too, and also not on the list anyway.

Got 2 kiddiewinks, Logan (fairy princess) 2 and Ashton ( spiderboy) 1. Didn't want to leave it too late for them too, the longer you stay the stronger the attatchment.

Keep the thread going so we can all keep each other updated!!!

We are all a brave bunch but life is for the living!!!!!!

Cheers

Re: Student Visa - Medicals

I agree, it's a diffcult costly route, but hey just think of the experience and the quality of life our families will ave and I'm sure in the long run we'll recoup the money we spent. I think one of the hardest parts is paying for the kids at school and the restrictions for working, but we'll all manage somehow and then look back in a few hours and feel proud of our achievement..

We lodge our student visa in Oct, so can't wait now and sit anxiously for a buyer so we can sell our home for the pennies..

Yeah guys good to stay in touch it is a hard process making sure that school/college fees are paid for the 2 years, health cover, accommodation, cars, moving costs with the dog etc but it will all be worth it for a better life down under!!! We have two kids Alicia 9 and Ben 6 as the same as you dont want to leave it to late so they can settle in. Our friends emigrated to Perth 2 years ago and there kids are about the same age as ours and the have settled in fine. :)

Re: Student Visa - Medicals

Kiddiewinks are v resiliant to whatever is thrown at them, prob better than some adults!!!

As long as they know they're loved they cope fine!!!

We at least don't have the added cost of schooling for a few years, another drain for you guys, as you say there's a lot to pay out at the start!!!

We're just heading over with our suitcases n some cash thats bout it!!

Has anyone looked into flights, luggage allowance etc, etc.

I was hoping for double luggage, but don't think we'l get that on a student visa, I was just planning on e-mailing whoever we decide to go with.

BA.s flights look good, but go up on 8th Dec, and don't go down till bout 23rd ish, even then still a bit pricey.

Singapore not too bad either, and don't go up quite as high mid couple of weeks. Thats why we're trying to get out end a Nov/ beg Dec though.

Re: Student Visa - Medicals

Had researched much yet about flights, but so-far early Jan for us 4 is around £2100, but hoping to get those lower. I also had hoped for double allowance, and didn't realise this maybe wouldn't apply to student visa's. I think I'll do as you suggested, email them nearer the time and moan a bit!!!!.

We've yet to organise shipment, that's our plan for next week, and we are thinking about getting 3-4 quotes, not sure who yet though, more dosh!!!!

Roll on the sunshine and a few cold beers/wine and then I think it will hit us all, which is probably when we'll have a few more beers/wine...

Hee hee, totally!!!!

Counting down, think its only bout 10 weeks and we should be there or there abouts!!!!

Temp visa's sometimes they do sometimes they don't apparently. That sounds quite good prices for flights, think we'l be bout the same if we go Nov, £2300 ish Dec then it doubles form the 8th!!!!

I priced ours through Emirates thats who we went through when we went over in the summer just there and they were the cheapest at the time plus its a good flight we went Glasgow/Dubai/Perth we will be going Glasgow/Dubai/Brisbane next time flights are coming in around £1400 for the 4 of us in June 2008?

God 10 weeks thats scary!!! Hope everything goes well for you guys..

mandyp Sep 21st 2007 10:44 am

Re: Student Visa - Medicals

Only thing a really didn't fancy bout emirates was the stop in Dubai, its bout 8 hours I believe and its going to be bad enough for the kiddiewinks without a wasted 8 hours in an airport!!

BA was best a think, it was glasgow/ heathrow/ sydney/ Brisbaine and only an hour or so between flights.

Can't remember Singapore route but similar times between stops.

We flow 18 months ago with singapore, excellent flight, with one stop for hour and half in singapore(sin) and then straight to Melbourne.. I'm happy to go with anyone, as long as we get there soon as the waiting, nailing biteing and to-do-list is getting bigger every day...

Catch you all later, just popping out to get a pressie for my brother's boy, I'll check this interesting thread tonight.

I did notice the Emirates flight connection times were 8 hours I had to wait 50 minutes which was great in the summer!!! A lady I know how is going over in the summer 2008 said when she booked through Emirates and as the flight connection time was so long Emirates put you up in a hotel she said??? Not that Im trying to sell you to go on Emirates or anything??? just letting you know what I know..

Re: Student Visa - Medicals

Unless it was well cheap, a just don't see the point in waiting about in an airport for such a long time its such a long flight as it is!!

At the end of the day though, its going to come down to availablility cause am sure there will be less choice as time goes on. We'l be booking as soon as the flat is sold and there's a signature!!!

That's great that you guys have been though, Colin's been to New Zealand and Sydney airport!!!! New Zealand was his first choice when we started looking into this, but we opted for Oz.

Re: Student Visa - Medicals

I am going over on a horticulture course (other than chef, seemed the safest option for the area I want to study). Our house sale seems to be going through, but has now been held up because the mortgage company wants electrics/ timber and cavity wall tie testing. Buyer seems to be taking his time. I am slightly panicking.
The course I am doing starts in Feb (which our place is booked on) but is also advertised as starting in July. We had been told that if the house sale fell through we could push back to the July course, but apparently that course start has no been scrapped. So wait another year or find another course, of the house sale falls through.
EVEN MORE PRESSURE for the house sale to go through. I am just so paranoid that is won't happen.
I had a job lined up back in November, and a buyer for our house and that all fell through within a week of each other too!! Makes me wander if maybe it just isn't ment to be sometimes.
Anyone else finding the process rather stressful??

Oh s***,

Sounds well stressfull pumpkin blossom!!! We've just put our flat on the market need to leave here in bout 10 weeks. I really don't see us having any worries, but you never know until you start!!!

The way I see it, the harder you have to fight for something the more worthwhile it must be!!!

We also just noticed on the credit card statement that the high commission London took our visa monies as soon as the visa was lodged, cheek of them when it had to be forwarded to Sydney!!!

Cheers all

can I just double check I have everything right?

My husband has been offered his place at college to study horticulture, providing he passes the course we then apply for another visa which lasts 18 months and in that time he needs to get at least 12 months work experience in his field of study, then we can apply for residency?

If im wrong any where please let me know, just we've had 2 offers on our house now and expecting another monday morning so worrying a bit about everything as its starting to seem real with selling house.

thanks:)

Hi werty1,

Yeah sounds like you got it right, as long as the course is 2 years (though a think they run 1year 9 months). I'm heading out to work just now, but al try put on the run down of diff visa's and time scales that the agent made up for us some time tomorrow.

Basically it's the timeline plan for getting PR then citizenship.

Hi Brockies,

Yeah, it's pretty hard leaving Boston ( dog ) but he's also in his twilight years n to be honest we just couldnt' afford it, same goes for shipping costs. We really don't have anything of value anyway.

We'l book accomodation as soon as missives are signed

Yeah we have been looking on the realestate website just wasnt sure how hard it was to get a rental set up when you are not in the country. I have heard stories about rentals that you need to go through a interview process with the owner first??

It is costing all of money to take all our belongings over but a lot of it is new and I dont think we would walk of better selling it all then buying new stuff thats why we are deciding to take it all. We are even thinking the car but I have heard that is expensive to do also.....

Re: Student Visa - Medicals

It is only 900 hours of post course work experiance which you have to get, which you have 18 months to fit in. If you manage to find a full time job straight away then it should only take 25 weeks.

We are selling all the household contents, other than souvaneers etc which we will leave with family until we have PR (there is rather a lot to maybe have to ship back again). The dog is coming (had her microchip done a couple of weeks ago). Not much of our stuff is new, so we may as well just buy new once there. We got married at Easter so will buy things like cuttlery sets out of gift money.

We found the course we (well I) am doing through googling TAFE for the area we wanted to go to. Most of the TAFE sites seem to have international sections on their web site, but not all of the courses are suitable to get PR once finished.
I also e-mailed a fair few agents, but got differeing, if any info from them. Some just don't deal with student visas.

Werty1, where is your husband going to be studying? Assuming our house sale goes through that is what I will be studying in Adelaide.

Brockies, I would put your house up ASAP. Have a look at all the posts by people struggling to sell their houses. It has been 16 months since we put our house up and our buyer seems to be slowing right down. Hopefully that is all he is doing and not thinking of running off.

We would also like to leave before the first week in December when the flights go up, but it all depends on our buyer. We are considering offering him a discount if we complete before November, as we would still have to give a months notice at work, and I won't do that until we have signed.

I go through waves of being really excited, and then waves of 'what if house falls through again and we can't go'. I am not normally a stressed person, but house selling really is terrible!

Re: Student Visa - Medicals

Hello all

I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction??
I'm getting a little confused regarding the 2 year study requirement (104 weeks on DIAC website) and the 900 hours work experience thing for getting PR.
Do you still need the 900 hours work experience if you meet the 2 year(104 weeks) study requirement?
My plans were to go as a skilled migrant, but since the TRA removed pathway D, that’s no longer an option :( so like many others I'm taking the study route.
I'm quiet flexible about what to study, but with all the info everywhere it's become a little overwhelming, so any ideas on the best courses for gaining PR would really be appreciated.:unsure::huh:

Hi all,

We are shipping our contents to Melbourne, or that's the plan, as we plan to contact a few companies next week.. Any ideas os suggestions welcomed, we are in hertfordshire....

Yes I agree it's so stressful and some days we are so excited and then the next when you think of the cost and the amount of things to sort out you start worrying.. Our house is on the market, but really we've only got 3 months left.. We decided that if the house doesn't sale or exchange in time, we'll leave it to the solicitor to finalise and maybe a family member regarding the keys etc.

As i understand, it's 2 yrs studying, then 900 hrs work experience before you can apply to the tra for assessment. Sarah is going to study patisserie which she's looking forward to and I haven't got a clue what I'm going to do with those restrictions for working and then taking the kids to school.

Try and remain positive guys, it will be amazing and after the initial couple of years it will 'hopefully' get easier.

Russ & Sarah
