"Building and manufacturing tradesmen will be barred from entering the country altogether under changes to the critical skills list."

Yeah, on the new 'Nothing to Declare' they'll have sniffer dogs searching for traces of brick dust in their luggage. When they take swabs and screen them in their wee machine, it wont say 'traces of cocaine/heroine' it'll say 'traces of clay' LOL You gotta laugh, otherwise you'd cry!!!! lol

Re: AUSTRALIA'S intake of skilled migrants will be slashed by 18,500
On the question of numbers, I think they've gone for the maximum political impact and the devil will be in the detail, impossible to say if it takes immediate effect but seems to be bad news for people not on the CSL.
On the mechanism being described, yes I think that Michelle Grattan and Peter Martin, two highly respected commentators, are the victim of a sub-editor's gaffe in this paragraph:
"Bricklayers, plumbers, welders, carpenters and metal fitters will no longer get entry. The list of critical skills is now confined mainly to the health and medical, engineering and IT professions."
Best to wait for the Minister's announcement but I'm sure that people in those occupations will still be getting visas, it may just take longer.
Cheers,
George Lombard

If you have a pre grant letter (living onshore for offshore visa) - but no actual grant yet are you safe and locked in to get your visa (assuming no change to character/meds etc)?
Or are you still subject to being told - sorry run out of visas, wait til next year
or worse still, sorry not going to give you one at all now?

If you have given them notice that you will travel before 01 July, the worst that could happen is that they will advise you they can not grant until after 30th June.

Ta very much
In that case its very, very lucky that our (booked and paid for) trip runs over Jun into July otherwise its pretty scarey that we could have had to repeat a very expensive overseas trip even after notifiying them of travel dates before this announcement.

No problem if you're state sponsored, the changes seem to only affect the CSL.
