Default Poverty NZ

There's been a lot of talk about poverty in NZ of late, even a television program
about it. Can anyone shed any light on this. If I move my family to NZ are we
gonna be stuck in some poverty trap and not be able to get back to Wales if things
turn sour.

Have you got qualifications and savings, then if so, forget poverty. There is an
incredible divide between the haves and have nots. The average Kiwi has an acre of
land, a boat and about 3 cars per family. Those in poverty are Pacific Island
immigrants and rural Maori.

What alot of bull, unless the poster is being sarcastic. The so called 'average'
person described would be amoung the the top 5% of people in NZ. The average wage
in NZ is around $32,000 dollers. Not alot really.

Many of the middle class are struggling just keeping up their payments on their
overvalued homes. Sure there are people who live a good life in NZ but there are
many people who live from day to day.

The facts (2001, source The Economist) are: GDP per capita:

UK USD24390
Aus USD21270
NZ USD14300

For interest, compare:

USA USD33540
Canada USD20750
Spain USD15120
Greece USD11870.

The Economist also ranks countries on GDP per capita according to 'purchasing power parity' which aims to give a better feel for comparative purchasing power.

USA 100
Aus 74.7
UK 69.6
NZ 55.2

Well clearly you are not here. Yes the salaries are pitiful, but so are the house
prices and cost of living (AKL excepted). I am earning half what I earned in the UK
(some 50% more than the figure you quoted, hence why I stated if the poster had quals
they had little to worry about), but I have a bigger house, more land, more
disposable income, less debt and a better quality of life. Poverty is more than
financial (ask any sociologist). Yes there are third world conditions in NZ (e.g.
South Auckland, East Cape, etc), but there is more affluence. Where are the facts
about the middle classes struggling to pay for their overvalued houses - you make
that sound like the UK after the recession in the 90's. Where I live property prices
have increased by 7% in the last year. I have many friends who earn less and have
more than an acre and less of a mortgage. They do have boats, they do have 4x4's,
they do drink, they do not have crappy lives. What they do not do (in general) is
have expensive overseas holidays, change their cars as frequently, etc. They do grow
their own fruit and veg, fatten their own livestock, etc. They also pay their
mortgages off early (v. big Kiwi thing) because they work hard. "Ashley Watson"
