NZ timing of application etc
Hi everyone,
I booked our medicals and X-rays today for the end of December, but
I'm having second thoughts.
I'm finding it hard to work out when I should do everything. We
intended to put the house on the market in January at the same time as
sending off our NZ PR application (26 points, so we need the 6 month
work visa thing).
I thought I'd better check with the newsgroup to see roughly how long
it's taking to get the letter from NZ immigration offering the work
visa. Anyone got one recently? How long did it take?
I'm assuming my house will sell fairly quickly, but I can't go
anywhere until it's sold and I've got to keep the Medical certificates
within the 3 months etc.
It's so hard to time everything isn't it?
Any views would be very welcome.
Thanks
Karen

1. Are you aware you now need skills on the occupational shortage
list to get a job search visa?
2. You should consider what your fall back plan would be in case you
didn't get a job in NZ within the 6 months.
3. As far as I know (going from previous posts on this NG) NZIS
London office is fairly quick with processing applications.

Re: NZ timing of application etc
Thanks Jeremy,
Luckily, I'm on the the shortage list at the moment!
I know it's a risk going on the 6 month work visa, especially selling
up and taking the children. I need the equity from the house sale to
fund the trip, and my husband couldn't manage here with the 3 kids
minus my salary.
If the worst comes to the worst and we have to come back, then I will
look upon it as a great experience, more time spent with the kids etc,
and something that was worth doing!
If I come back, I would at least hope to come back with a fair bit of
my equity, which will mean I'll still have a deposit for a house over
here. And who knows, we may come back and decide to go and live
somewhere else in the UK.
My motto at the moment is 'life's too short, so go for it!'
Cheers
Karen
ps To those of you that have mailed me with shared experience, I'll
mail you back as soon as I can! Thanks

Good luck to you in NZ.
It's good to see you've got the right attitude and have at least
thought through the possibilities.

Hi Karen
I appreciate how difficult it is trying to get the timing right - we tried and failed miserably. My partner's letter that he would be granted a work deferral visa came through in roughly two weeks back in July (don't know what the current situation is like - can't imagine they are that busy with the hike in passmark points, but don't know).
The controversy arises with our case that when the visa came back in the passport it stated that first entry had to be made by 21st November (exactly 3 months from date of first letter) . This was a shock as we too had thought we could eat into the 6 month period, sell the house and all go together.
My partner has been in Christchurch for 2 weeks now - not quite the rosie start we had expected. I'm in England waiting to sell the house whilst the children continue at school. Although it is early days, he is not having an easy ride. At this time of year (holiday period) it is difficult to find good rental accommodation - he has seen some real demics!! Also, he is a software developer and became extremely frustrated with having to go through Agencies in this country. He is finding the agencies just as frustrating out there too.
He has decided that turning up on companies doorsteps is the way to go - but only time will tell on this one.
So at the moment I don't know whether I'm going or staying - I know it would have been easier in some respects for him if we had all been out there together - but I'm a very impatient sort of person so all these hurdles he's got to overcome would have been killing me!
He keeps feeding me clipits of info. about problems with too many asian immigrants, problems with the health service, shortage of teachers etc, so at the mo. we are having to weigh up things. My feeling is that probably the crap here outweighs the crap there (if you pardon my language!).
If anyone is heading to Christchurch, he stayed initially for 12 days at the Alglenn Motel, Papanui Road - Shirley and Euan were extremely helpful, even collected him from airport, rooms were very comfortable etc.
Here's hoping that January is a good house selling month for all of us!!

Thanks everyone,
But Don, I can only find reference to the medical certificates having
to be under 3 months old when you lodge your application.
NZ immi site says this:
'Your Medical and X-ray Certificate Forms must not be more than 3
months old at the time you lodge your residence application.'
It would be great if it was 6 months though, so if I'm wrong please
let me know!
Cheers

Medicals are only valid for three months. It can all be a logistical
nightmare. We sold our house and had moved out even before our visas went in
but we knew it would be ok, well it HAD to be!!! and it was ) You have to
have faith (i dont mean in the religous sence) i mean selling your house and
coming here is a HUGE step it HAS to work. It can be very stressfull at
times but im sure it will work out for you. What sort of work do you do??
i can start having a look for you.

It's police certificates that need to be less than 6 months old, unfortunately medicals do need to be < 3 months when you submit your PR appln.

Thanks Em,
I'm a Deputy Art Editor on a women's magazine at the moment, but I
suppose I'm called a Graphic designer.
I've done some research via friends in NZ, and they seem pretty
positive about my prospects, but I think I'm going to employ Taylor &
Associates, an employment agency specifically for migrants, who are
based in NZ. They are a part of the Emigration Group, who have been
really helpful. Their guy in NZ is very realistic and says I have a
fair chance, but I need to be there! So off I go!
Our medicals are coming up at the end of the month and of course my
husband thinks he's got some terrible disease and we won't be able to
go anyway! Luckily I do enough positive thinking for the both of us!
Cheers Em, by the way, where are you living?
