UK to Oz. A Place in the Sun. Wed 8pm Channel 4
According to the tv listings, tomorrow's (Wed 8pm, C4) "A Place in the Sun"
is in Australia.
The property series hosted by Amanda Lamb returns for a new run.
Ever wanted to know how to move to Australia? On tonight's show,
Kevin and Jackie Arkell discover that their £100,000 budget can
buy them a luxury house in a seaside resort, a brand new designer
home, a traditional Queenslander house on stilts or a custom
built house by the beach for £56,500.

If the program, or the research it was based on, is more than 2 years
old, you might need to double those values. House prices in or near
most major cities have nearly doubled in the past two years.
Also, it might be as well to determine what is considered "luxury" and
what is meant by "the beach". There are many beaches where you will
not get a house for the prices stated, these being the popular beaches
where everyone wants to live. In general, beware of buying real estate
without have been to the desired area of residence and looked at the
average prices, availability of employment, amenities, etc.
I'm sure there are plenty of internet aware real estate agents that
have information on the net so that you can start looking but nothing
beats experience "on the ground".

Just watched it, lovely properties shown. A nice insight into the Sunshine coast. Great value for money. Only one with a pool though and that was communal.

I'm pretty sure that at the end of the program some text noted that
the exchange rate was based on that during the spring of this year-
can anyone verify this?
I assume that given the rapid rise in house prices that a fall will
follow at some point- after all it's not as if Oz is a little short on
land!!!

That's right.
You get more Oz $s to the pound today than back in the spring.

btw, that custom built house excluded the cost of buying some
land to put it on.

Oz is not short of land but it's definitely short of water. Lack of
water makes the majority of OZ less than desirable to live in. Take a
look at the population spread and you will notice just where the
majority of us live... It's not as if the entire continent has equal
usability..

Well, that makes it easier then... That means you could "own" that
house for anywhere from UKP56501 to UKP5,000,000 and that top end
figure is conservative....
