Hi there,

We've only recently started considering Australia as a possible emigration destination and have been looking today at the points system. George - you indicated that the MODL will become obsolete, but on the online assessment form I completed today it was still there...??!?

My husband would come under "Computing Professionals NEC" at present, and is hoping to get the remaining 15 points he requires (he only gets 105 thus far) by changing jobs at some point and getting 1 year's experience as "Computing Professional - specialising in Network Security/Firewall/Internet Security" (it says you get 15 points if you have 1 year's experience out of 4 years prior to applying).

If they do abolish the MODL, will they replace it with something else or will there be no other way for my husband to get the extra 15 points he critically needs?

Thanks in advance,

Anita :-)

Hi Anita,

No the MODL was removed on 8 Februaryfor everyone except a small group of onshore students. You can follow the successive announcements here: http://www.immi.gov.au/skilled/gener.../whats-new.htm . Your husband is going to be hoping for state sponsorship I would imagine.

Cheers,

George Lombard

Oh great. I did an assessment on www.workpermit.com the other week and it was still there - nice of them to ensure their website is up-to-date and accurate

Yes George, he would be hoping for sponsorship in that case (probably SA as they have IT on their list), plus he'd have to do the IELTS test to get another 10 points. Does anyone know how easy it is to get 7 on each level? (he's British born but his grammar, vocab and spelling leave a little to be deserved... ).

Thanks again, Anita

there is a rumor that Accountants with final semester finishing in June/July can get skill assessment without IELTS requirement from CPA until 31 August under the special circumstance.
Can anyone verify this?

Oh that's good to know - it's crazy that a native British speaker is only classed as 'competent' and not 'proficient'! I guess it's because there are so many 'British' people in the UK who DON'T speak fluent English that they can't assume 'British' means 'fluent English speaker'. At least it gives us a chance to get an extra 10 points if necessary

The Minister has today announced a temporary suspension of certain general skilled migration visas. The move hopes to ensure that all offshore general skilled applications made after today are in accordance with the occupations included on the new Skilled Occupation List (SOL), to be released later this month. The Minister has not indicated when the suspension will be lifted, however it will be no earlier than the announcement of the new SOL.
The Minister has announced that his Department will not accept applications for the following visa subclasses from 8 May 2010 until further notice:
• Subclass 175 – Skilled Independent;
• Subclass 176 – Skilled Sponsored; and
• Subclass 475 – Skilled Regional Sponsored.
Therefore, any applications received by the Department after 8 May 2010 for one of the above visa subclasses will be returned and the visa application charge refunded.
Please note that this suspension does not affect onshore general skilled migration visas.

Cheers,

George Lombard

Hi,

I think they are all doing to clear the backlog, so How they will clear the backlog if DIAC is unable to take the decision due to certain factors, like in any country AHC is linger on the cases on internal and external security checks, i know many applicants since may 2009 in CSL are still awaiting.

Any idea, what will be the future of all applicants in 175 & 176 with CSL, after the scrap of CSL, if they couldn't clear them before it.

Thx!

It's not just about speaking. Illiteracy is widespread.

Just wondering - why did you put the quotes around British? (should be fun reading that answer).

Probably because it relates to having a British Passport
