Default Newbie seeks advice

I'm new to the forum so please excuse my lack of knowledge.

Can anyone advise me where to start? I'm 47, and my UK-based employer has offered me a job at their Canberra branch, it's a pre-sales role in computer software, specifically secure messaging. I've accepted the job so need to know which category of visa to go for.

Would phoning the Austalian High Commission helpline be a good start?

Has anyone been through similar circumstances recently?

I'd be grateful for any advice.

Thanks
Stewart

Depending on whether your employer wants to sponsor you for temporary or permanent visa you would apply for either 457 or ENS. Take a read of www.immi.gov.au for visa options.

Dorothy,

Thanks, my wife isn't keen on the 457 as we think that allows 4 years and she sees a situation where we want to stay but have to return to the UK after 4 years. Is it possible to lodge an ENS and 457 at the same time (hedging my bets so to speak).

What are your thoughts on ENS versus RSMS?
The job is in Canberra which is covered by RSMS. Given I have 'exceptional circumstances' being aged 47, would that be looked on more favourably under RSMS? (I meet the criteria that position is essential to operation of business and employer can't find a suitably qualified younger applicant)

Thanks for your help
Stewart

It's up to your employer what visa they sponsor for. Speak to them to see what they are willing to do.

To add to what Dorothy has said, don't bother phoning the high Commission helpline, cost a bomb for starters. You'd be better phoning a registered agent - most of them will do an initial assessment for free.
